Zilmax- Considering the Plusses and the Minuses
Tue, 19 Nov 2013 16:45:56 CST
The product Zilmax remains off the market as 2013 begins to wind down- having been removed by its manufacturer Merck after questions of animal well being were raised by some in the US feedlot and cattle processing industry. Market Analyst Don Close with Rabo Agri Finance talked with Farm Director Ron Hays about the pulling of Zilmax and the impact that resulted in fewer pounds of beef being available to the US beef marketplace.
Close said that while tonnage has gone down with the Zilmax now off the market while Merck works on ways to help educate feedlots and their employees how to best use the product with as little impact as is possible on animal mobility as feedlot cattle are readied for the processing plant- the percentage of animals grading choice or higher has gone up- suggesting the number of lean pounds that Zilmax helps produce does come with a price. That price may be lower grading feedlot graduates.
Close is today's guest on the Beef Buzz as he talks about Zilmax- suggesting that it will come back to the market- probably in the first half of 2014.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the region on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
