Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News, Amarillo, Texas, files this report for boxed beef trade ending December 6, 2013:
The daily spot choice boxed beef cutout ended the week last Friday at $201.47, which was $1.41 lower than the previous Friday with very low volume again at 717 loads sold for the week in the daily reported spot cutout trade, which was slightly better than the previous week. It represented about 10 percent of the total sales for the week.
The comprehensive or average choice cutout which includes all types of sales including formula exports and out-front, was at $202.77, and was $2.54 higher.
The total reported boxed beef volume was 6,941 loads, which was 1,235 loads better than last week reflecting good restocking of shelves after Thanksgiving. Exports were at 761 loads which was 208 loads better than last week. The overseas exports were a little over 500 loads and the NAFTA portion of the exports was 235 loads.
The formula trade was at 3,413 loads and was 49 percent of the total loads sold. The formula trade is quite often based on the previous week's spot trade which was much higher and influenced the total increase in prices even though the spot trade was lower this week.
The out-front sales were 1,356 loads which was 633 loads more than last week and a very big improvement.
In the primal cut trade, all of the primal cuts were 1-2 lower except ribs which continue to increase prior to the holiday and were 4-7 higher.
Fifty-percent trimmings ended the week 8-10 lower but were even lower than that on Tuesday.
The cow cutout was about 2.5 higher and 90-percent trimmings were over 3.5 higher compared to the previous Friday.
