Monsanto Leader Addressing Sustainability at Cameron University

In conjunction with "Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities," Cameron University's triennial academic festival, the School of Science and Technology will present "Moving Towards A More Sustainable Agriculture," by Doug Rushing, Ph.D., Director of Global Industry Affairs, Monsanto Company. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 22, at 7 p.m. in the Shepler Ballroom and is open to the public at no charge. Dinner will be served to attendees at 6 p.m.

Rushing will present information on the challenges to sustainable agriculture and the agriculture industry's role in critical issues such as the ever-growing demand for food, water and energy, global food security, and the impact on the ecosystem and climate change. He will also address the topic of biotechnology or GMOs in an effort to dispel some of the myths surrounding this controversial issue and present information about the safety and benefits of GMOs.

In addition, Rushing's presentation will touch on national and international organizations that play a crucial role in the development of sustainable agriculture, including the Field to Market Alliance, The Sustainability Consortium, The World Economic Forum's New Visions for Agriculture, and The Global Harvest Initiative.

A native of North Carolina, Rushing received a bachelor's degree in horticulture from North Carolina State and a master's and Ph.D. in crop science from Oklahoma State University. He began his career with Monsanto in field product development in 1984. Since joining Monsanto, he has had several roles in product management and was the first manager for the development of Roundup Ready Soybeans in the late 1980s. Rushing managed Monsanto's environmental issues in the Midwest and government affairs in the southeastern U.S. before managing Monsanto's technical business in the southern U.S. In this role, he was responsible for the launch of the first new biotech products in cotton, Roundup Ready cotton and Bollgard cotton. He also managed the Technology Development organization for the U.S. and Canada, which was charged with developing new germplasm and biotech traits in corn, soybeans, cotton, and alfalfa, as well as supporting all commercial products at Monsanto. Rushing is currently responsible for Monsanto's industry relations with commodity organizations such as the National Cotton Council and American Sugar Alliance.

Rushing's presentation is cosponsored by the Comanche County Farm Bureau, the Great Plains Canola Association, the Oklahoma Cattleman's Association, the Oklahoma Cotton Council, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, and the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association.
