American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) has announced the top eleven finalists in the 2015 AFR/OFU Agricultural Achievement Contest. This year's contest was held at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City March 16-19, with an awards presentation March 19.
The annual contest recognizes outstanding youth in Oklahoma who display exceptional showmanship skills and possess extensive knowledge of the livestock industry, including production, management, processing and end product utilization. Each year, AFR/OFU presents $5,000 in prizes to the organization's Agricultural Achievement Award winners.
The 2015 AFR/OFU Youth Agricultural Achievement Award winners were Hallie Barnes, Porter FFA, first place; Jaryn Frey, Kingfisher FFA, second place; Wyatt Catron, Stilwell FFA, third place; Brayden Foley, Kingfisher FFA, fourth place; Jill Mencke, Hennessey FFA, fifth place; Jason Murray, Kingfisher FFA, sixth place; Vivienne Hassenbeck, Elgin FFA, seventh place; Brynn Danker, Wellson FFA, eighth place; Regina Leuty, McAlester FFA, ninth place; Brittny Richards, Oktaha FFA, tenth place; and Sheldon Price, Laverne FFA, eleventh place.
"As an organization, we take pride in the opportunities AFR/OFU provides the youth of Oklahoma," said AFR/OFU President Terry Detrick. "Our annual agricultural achievement contest is another way we help young people showcase and develop their talents."
Competitors in the AFR/OFU Ag Achievement Contest are judged on showmanship ability and test scores from a written examination on all phases of the livestock industry, including current events. Contestants' combined test and showmanship scores determine the top ten individuals; this year marks the first year for the top 11 to be awarded. The top 11 are then interviewed regarding their individual livestock project and the livestock industry as a whole.
Participation in the AFR/OFU Agricultural Achievement Contest is limited to Oklahoma junior and senior high school students who exhibit an animal at OYE. For more information on the contest or other AFR/OFU youth events, contact AFR/OFU Youth & Education Coordinator Blaire Boyer at (405)218-5561 or bboyer@afrmic.com.
The agricultural achievement contest is just one of several AFR/OFU Youth Program traditions. In addition, the organization also offers a speech contest series, a summer youth leadership summit, statewide scholarships, livestock handling and skills contests, livestock judging and grading competitions and many other leadership opportunities.
