United States Cattle on Feed numbers were up one percent in the latest US Cattle on Feed report that was issued on Friday. Placements were shy of pre-release estimates leaving on feed slightly larger than prior year.
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on June 1, 2015. The inventory was 1 percent above June 1, 2014.
Placements in feedlots during May totaled 1.71 million, 10 percent below 2014. Net placements were 1.63 million head. During May, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 355,000, 600-699 pounds were 260,000, 700-799 pounds were 389,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 710,000.
Marketings of fed cattle during May totaled 1.71 million, 8 percent below 2014. May marketings are the lowest since the series began in 1996.
Tom Leffler with Leffler Commodities talked with Radio Oklahoma Network's Leslie Smith about the USDA report after it was released on Friday- and his comments are featured in our latest Beef Buzz.
Leffler believes the key numbers released were the Placement figures. Leffler said the placements of 1.71 million head were 13.3 percent below the five year average and this was the third smallest May placement of the past 20 years. Kansas was down 21 percent, Texas down 16 percent and Nebraska was down eight percent versus a year ago. In the heavy weight breakdowns, Leffler said the 710,000 animals above 800 pounds signaled the FIRST time the heavy weight placements weren't higher than the previous year in 2015.
