Noble Foundation Junior Beef Excellence Program Expands, Adds Four Counties
The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation will hold its annual fall steer nomination for the 2015-2016 Junior Beef Excellence Program from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Noble Foundation's Pasture Demonstration Farm, located 5 miles northwest of Ardmore.

The Junior Beef Excellence Program is open to 4-H and FFA steer exhibitors who show their steers and abide by the rules and regulations of their county show in Carter, Garvin, Jefferson, Johnston, Love, Marshall, Murray or Stephens County in Oklahoma. Four new counties have been added to the program this year: Atoka, Bryan, Coal and McClain. Steers must be shown at the spring livestock show in their county to be eligible.

Production records for the record keeping and interview contest will be kept using the Noble Jr. Beef Journal app that is available for iOS and Android devices as well as desktop computers. "This app not only helps students be more efficient," said Bryan Nichols, Noble Foundation livestock consultant, "but it continues to advance the use of technology in our industry."

All steers will be entered, weighed and permanently identified with an EID tag at fall nomination. DNA samples will be collected. There is no weight requirement in the fall; however, steers must weigh between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds at the spring delivery in March.

From 2002 to 2015, this program has involved 765 participants and 899 steers. These steers represent $1,104,303, all of which is distributed back to the participants based on their individual steer's market value. This year's program will award $9,650 in prize money to participants who finish in the top 10 of the carcass contest and $3,000 to participants who finish in the top three of their division in the record keeping and interview contest.
