Talking 2012 Farm Bill with House Ag Committee Chairman Frank Lucas
Tue, 26 Jun 2012 13:33:13 CDT
The Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas, talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays on Tuesday afternoon about the latest 2012 Fasrm Bill developments- highlights of that conversation included:
Chairman Lucas and his staff have reviewed the Senate Farm Bill (as amended) and while he is very pleased that Chairlady Stabenow was able to get a bill through the Senate and to final passage, he sees improvements that the House Ag Committee will be able to address, which will make it a more equitable bill to all regions- and a more fiscally responsible bill by larger reductions in nutrition spending.
The Chairman is not certain that mark up can be done in one day on July 11th in the House Ag Committee, but is hopeful that the Committee proposal will be complete by the end of that week.
After passage of the Committee bill, Lucas will turn to House Leadership and ask for "first available" floor time to push the measure to House passage.
If passed by the House, he sees a successful Conference with the Senate Ag Committee leadership, crafting what he calls the "ultimate farm bill."
He remains optimistic about getting a farm bill done this year, saying he will do everything in his power to get that accomplished.
