Senator James Lankford At Meeting With President Trump on Wednesday on Tariffs and Their Impact on Ag- He Talks After with Ron Hays

Wed, 25 Jul 2018 19:19:50 CDT

Oklahoma Senator James Lankford was one of about 15 lawmakers invited to the White House on Wednesday afternoon to talk trade and the tariffs imposed on foreign goods and the retaliation against US products- including lots of US farm products- and- their impact on farmers and ranchers. Ahead of his actual meeting with President Trump- Lankford and the other lawmakers were invited to be in the audience for the White House announcement of a trade breakthrough with the European Union- a deal that includes a promise by the EU to buiy more US Soybeans. Click here for coverage of that announcement.

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Senator Lankford about the EU Deal- and all of the other trade issues that have caused a great deal of angst among farmers and ranchers across the country- including right here in Oklahoma. Hays and Lankford talked the EU Announcement, dealings with China, Mexico, Japan and more. You can hear their full conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.

Senator Lankford also released the following statement after meeting with President Trump at the White House to discuss the current trade negotiations:

"The President's announcement today to wrap up trade disputes is an important and significant step forward and I continue to encourage the President and his staff to finalize his agreement with the EU and other trade partners around the world as quickly as possible," said Lankford. "In Oklahoma, our agriculture community relies heavily on trade to export our products. Opening a new market for agricultural trade to the EU and expanding to new markets is a huge win for Oklahoma producers and the economic future of the nation. I will continue to urge President Trump and his staff to conclude ongoing trade negations to restore certainty, open new markets, and make our trade fair worldwide."
