The Big Four Open the Conference to Reconcile the 2018 Farm Bill Between the House and Senate Versions
Wed, 05 Sep 2018 10:45:30 CDTThe public meeting of the full Conference Committee to reconcile H. R. 2- the 2018 Farm Bill- convened Wednesday morning, with the Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Mike Conaway of Texas, turning over the gavel to the Chairman of the Senate Ag Committee, Pat Roberts of Kansas. Roberts, the Senior Senator from Kansas, will chair the Conference for the 2018 product.
Roberts, in his opening comments, said "This is the eighth farm bill that I've been a part of during my time in public service. The circumstances are always a bit different, but we all have a history of working together in a bipartisan, bicameral fashion to find solutions and to get farm bills done. If it was important then, it is even more so now."
"The goal, the responsibility, the absolute requirement is to provide farmers, ranchers, growers and everyone within America's agriculture and food value chain certainty and predictability during these very difficult times. This is paramount to many other issues and concerns.
"Both the House and Senate recognize this need. Clearly, both have taken the steps to get us to this point today. We are very close to the finish line, but we still have a lot of work a lot of compromise that remains to be done."
The first four speakers at the joint meeting of the Senate and House were Senator Roberts, Senator Debbie Stabenow, House Ag Chair Mike Conaway and his ranking member Collin Peterson.
