From the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention -Dave Daley Asks Have We lost the Animal Welfare Battle?
Thu, 05 Feb 2015 05:33:32 CSTOne of the classes that many attendees of the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention's Cattlemen's College circled as one that they wanted to check out was conducted by Dave Daley of California State University in Chico. Daley addressed the statement "Why We Lost the Argument on Animal Welfare." The session was described with the following paragraph:
"What is the consumer asking of America's beef producers? Thia class will cover the most relevant welfare issues for the beef industry and provide being, production and marketing. Included in the presentation will be how to lose the argument on animal welfare, producer perspectives on animal welfare, major issues and impractical solutions for the next decade."
Daley says that animal agriculture has lost public trust on many of the issues surrounding animal welfare, because we often are talking but not communicating. This cattle producer from northern California turned Professor explained the non agricultural mindset that he runs into daily at the University where he teaches. Daley says that farmers and ranchers need to understand how others think and not laugh at others when their viewpoint is different than that of traditional production agriculture.
Daley says that Chico is a small community in northern California with the University adding 15,000 to the population annually- with many of the them from much larger cities and the great majority of those students having no connection with agriculture. So- he gets questions from students asking why you are milking those beef cows in that pasture- or do the animals feel pain when they are branded (and he says they don't want the answer- "not much.").
