Mike Conaway and Others Pleased CCC Funding is Included in CR Passed by House
|
Congressman Mike Conaway, Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee, issued the following statement upon passage of the Continuing Resolution (CR) which funds the U.S. government into December and includes funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help rural America, farmers, ranchers, and dairy producers:
"Last Friday, there was a bipartisan agreement to fund ALL of the U.S. government, including USDA so they could help rural America and our farmers, ranchers, and dairy producers through some very, very difficult times.
"But, then, that deal was rescinded by Democratic leaders in Congress. Under yesterday’s House Democratic plan, rural America, farmers, ranchers, and dairy producers were excluded from help under COVID-19 relief and even from basic Farm Bill support. As the Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee, I strongly opposed this deliberate, unconscionable snubbing of rural America.
“Thanks to President Trump and Republican Leaders in Congress who also strongly opposed this reckless stunt, the Democrats finally modified their funding bill to include the Department of Agriculture."
Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas- another former chair of the House Ag Committee- also voted for the CR and was pleased the CC Funding was included- “The measure passed by the House not only keeps the government’s lights on, but it also keeps critical programs funded and operational, including vital Farm Bill programs providing ongoing COVID-19 relief to America’s farmers and ranchers.” Click here for his full statement.
Also reacting to the change in direction by Speaker Pelosi on the CCC funding- Zippy Duvall of the American Farm Bureau offered this statement- “We applaud Chairman Peterson and Ranking Member Conaway for their leadership, and House lawmakers for putting aside their differences to address the hardships being felt by America’s farmers and ranchers.
"For years, funding the CCC has been a bipartisan commitment. While we were disappointed it recently became a political flashpoint, we are pleased lawmakers on both sides of the aisle recognize that these funds help to sustain conservation programs and stock America’s pantry.
"I would be remiss if I did not also thank the Farm Bureau members across the country who let their elected leaders know how important the farm safety net is to the future of U.S. agriculture. We are grateful farmers’ voices were heard.”

U.S. CattleTrace Is a New Organization Focused On Beef Cattle Traceability
|
A relatively new company headquartered in Wamego, Ks., is focused on setting national standards for cattle traceability.
U.S. CattleTrace is a nonprofit, national organization devoted to developing an animal disease traceability program that would protect livestock wellbeing, the cattle industry and public health if a disease outbreak would occur, said Callahan Grund executive director for U.S. CattleTrace.
I recently spoke with Grund, and he said CattleTrace started as a pilot project funded by USDA, the State of Kansas and private funds.
The program is essentially a contact tracing system that would assist state and federal animal health officials in tracking sick cattle and identifying other animals that might have been exposed to them more quickly and efficiently, Grund said.
Right now, we don’t have any existing regulations for traceability of cattle under 18 months destined for food production, Grund said.
That’s one area missing in our traceability efforts in the U.S., he said.

House Retains T.W. Shannon to Assist with Redistricting
|
To enhance its strong commitment to public input in the upcoming redistricting process, the House of Representatives has retained T.W. Shannon as a public liaison on redistricting matters.
Shannon, Oklahoma’s 42nd speaker of the House and the first Black speaker in state history, is a member of the Chickasaw Nation who has lived in both urban and rural Oklahoma.
“T.W. Shannon is an incredibly effective communicator whose diversity and deep understanding of all of Oklahoma will strongly benefit the House’s public-focused redistricting process,” said House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka.
Shannon will assist the House Redistricting Committee and House Redistricting Office in a nonpartisan manner with public interaction and input. His primary duty is to build bridges between the public and the House on redistricting matters on behalf of all House members.

U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol Launches Nationwide Grower Recruitment Campaign
|
American cotton growers now can join the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, a new standard for verifying the sustainability progress of U.S. cotton. As consumers continue to demand eco-friendly products, enrolling in the Trust Protocol will help growers ensure markets for their cotton by verifiably demonstrating the sustainability record of American cotton in the global market.
At a crucial time for the U.S. cotton industry, the Trust Protocol helps U.S. growers document and showcase their land management and environmental stewardship practices while helping them achieve continuous improvement related to certain environmental sustainability measurements.
Each participating grower commits to documenting and tracking their progress toward improving soil carbon health while seeking year over year reductions in soil erosion, overall land use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. By 2025, the Trust Protocol seeks to have more than 50% of all U.S. cotton registered as Trust Protocol Cotton.

Nine Local Cattlemen's Organizations Receive Payout Checks from the OCF Steer Carcass Challenge
|
In 2019, 21 steers were donated to participate in the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation (OCF) Steer Carcass Challenge. The Steer Carcass Challenge is designed to provide an opportunity to donate to the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation while creating a venue for friendly competition based on performance and carcass merit of cattle.
"Approximately two thirds of the steers donated were from OCA members in unified counties. This means, the OCF sent half the profit off those cattle from unified counties back to the local level in support of active county cattlemen's associations," said Taylor Shackelford, OCF Coordinator.
The county payout checks were issued to the following local cattlemen groups: Carter County Cattlemen's , Custer County Cattlemen's Association, Hughes County Cattlemen's Association, Kiowa County Cattlemen's Association, Marshall County Cattlemen's Association, PAC County Cattlemen's Association, Pittsburg County Cattlemen's Association, Pottawatomie County Cattlemen's Association and Tri-County Cattlemen's Association.
