Inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress Coming to OKC Fairgrounds in January
|
In mid September, the Board of Directors of the National Western Livestock Show pulled the plug on the January 2021 event. In their statement they said "The Western Stock Show Association Board of Directors together with the National Western Stock Show management, has made the difficult decision to postpone the 115th National Western Stock Show by one year and to resume the event in January 2022.
"The COVID-19 pandemic does not allow for the Stock Show to host the annual event and comply with the health and safety guidelines that are necessary to protect Coloradans and help stop the spread. More importantly, the projected environment through to the end of the year is too uncertain and therefore not reassuring enough to allow a traditional Stock Show to take place without potentially compromising the health and safety of exhibitors, visitors, and the public at large."
That announcement left cattle breeds and other beef industry supporters looking for an alternate venue at the start of this coming year. A group of cattle industry leaders in Oklahoma have worked to provide the purebred industry a new venue in 2021 and have issued this media statement on Tuesday afternoon.
"We would like to announce the inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress that will be held on January 2-17, 2021 at the OKC Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. The Cattlemen’s Congress will provide an opportunity to showcase genetics, provide marketing opportunities and access to the latest industry products and services and educational opportunities for cattle breeders and industry enthusiasts.

Oklahoma AgCredit is a cooperative, owned by the members we serve. This ensures our customers’ needs come first. Our profit can only be used in two ways – retained to build our financial strength or passed on to members through our Patronage Program. Patronage is like an interest rebate and it basically reduces our members cost of borrowing. We have returned more than $53 million to our members since 1997.

Farm Bureau's The State: of the Debates
|
Through a series of articles they call The State, the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Advocacy and Political Affairs team is providing analysis related to "the state of" various aspects of the 2020 campaign season, including the race for the White House and key elections around the country. Michael Sistak is AFBF’s director of grassroots program development writes:
It’s 35 days until Election Day and with the first presidential debate last night, we are in the home stretch of the 2020 election. For the next four weeks, Americans will watch one debate per week, with Donald Trump and Joe Biden going head-to-head three times, and Mike Pence and Kamala Harris meeting just once. The debates offer opportunities and risk for both candidates. Will the voters see the debates as reassurance or discouragement in their candidate of choice?
With that in mind, let’s preview this stage of the campaign.
Expectations could not be higher for any of the candidates heading into debate night. For President Trump, his focus is likely to be on turning the conversation away from himself and toward Biden. Four years ago, then-candidate Trump ran as the non-politician outsider, which helped him prevail against a longtime politician with low approval numbers. This time, however, Donald Trump is the incumbent with a record on which he will be questioned. Currently, the president has an aggregate disapproval of 52%, versus 43% of Americans who approve of his job as the nation’s chief executive. On the question of the coronavirus pandemic, which has now claimed the lives of over 200,000 Americans, the president has a 56% disapproval to 40% approval rating; among those disapproving – 66% of independents.

Weaning Calves Correctly Is Good For Animals And The Pocketbook, Says Texas Extension AgriLife Specialist Dr. Ron Gill
|
Weaning calves correctly is good for both the animal and the pocketbook says Dr. Ron Gill, Extension livestock specialist for Texas AgriLife.
Gill was a featured speaker at the recent 2020 Virtual Cattle Raisers Convention which replaced the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Convention cancelled in March.
The issues associated with weaning and its cost to the industry is one of the largest economic drains on our industry, Gill said.
Gill said it costs $1 billion a year in lost production due to calves getting sick, poor performance and the cost of antibiotics.
The use of antibiotics in livestock is closely scrutinized and Gill said most antibiotics are used to treat respiratory diseases.
We need to try to manage calves to reduce the chance of them getting sick, Gill said.
Another factor to consider is the welfare of that calf.
To me the bigger issue is this animal welfare issue, Gill said.

USDA Funds Conservation Innovation Through On-Farm Trials of Conservation Systems
|
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is awarding $25 million in grants designed to help partners implement and evaluate innovative conservation practices that have demonstrated benefits on farmland.
The funding is provided through On-Farm Conservation Innovation Trials (On-Farm Trials), a component of the Conservation Innovation Grants program first authorized in the 2018 Farm Bill.
“On-Farm Trials help producers improve the health of their operations while at the same time helping NRCS build data to show the benefit of innovative conservation systems and practices applied on the land,” said NRCS Acting Chief Kevin Norton.
On-Farm Trials awardees work with NRCS and farmers and ranchers to implement innovative practices and systems on their lands that have not yet been widely adopted by producers. Awardees are required to evaluate the conservation and economic outcomes from these practices and systems, giving partners, producers and NRCS critical information to inform conservation work in the future.

Virtual Format Set For 2021 Beltwide Cotton Conferences
|
The National Cotton Council (NCC) will conduct the 2021 Beltwide Cotton Conferences (BWCC) virtually on January 5-7 (Tuesday-Thursday) due to continued concerns regarding COVID-19’s spread.
The BWCC, coordinated by the NCC, annually brings together university and USDA researchers, regulatory agencies, extension personnel/agents, consultants, and industry sales/support personnel to exchange information about new products and production/processing systems that can be tailored to individual farming operations for maximum efficiency.
Those planning to participate in the 2021 live-stream event must register at the BWCC’s website, www.cotton.org/beltwide/, which will be updated as program information becomes available. Registration will continue after the virtual 2021 BWCC concludes to permit registered participants access to the event’s on-demand content.
Registration costs for the 2021 BWCC have been reduced due to the virtual format: $180 for NCC/Cotton Foundation members, university and USDA researchers, extension personnel, associations and consultants; $500 for non-U.S. research, extension, associations, and consultants; $350 for non-NCC/Foundation members; and $75 for students.

CME Group to Launch Pork Cutoff Futures
|
CME Group Tuesday announced plans to launch Pork Cutout futures and options. The new contracts are designed to give the U.S. pork industry and export markets tailored risk-management tools on the cutout.
Tim Andriesen, CME Group managing director of agricultural products, says, “As the market has evolved, our customers continue to look for new tools to manage the price risk associated with hog and pork production.” Pending regulatory approvals, the Pork Cutout futures and options are slated to launch on November 9, and will be cash-settled to the CME Pork Cutout Index. The contracts will complement CME Lean Hog futures and options.
CME Group says hogs are increasingly bought and sold in the physical market based on a formula which uses the cutout. The Pork Cutout reflects the approximate value of a hog calculated using the prices paid for wholesale cuts of pork. The new contracts will be quoted in U.S. cents per pound and will have a contract size of 40,000 pounds.
