CoBank Releases 2021 Year Ahead Report - Forces That Will Shape the U.S. Rural Economy
|
The speed of the economic recovery will largely hinge on the availability, dissemination and reach of COVID-19 vaccines, pushing the expected burst of pent-up consumer demand into the latter half of 2021, according to a comprehensive ’year-ahead outlook report from CoBanks Knowledge Exchange division
“The coming year will be a recovery year for most Americans and the businesses that make up the U.S. economy,” said Dan Kowalski, vice president of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange division. “The early part of the year should look very different than the latter, but in total, economic growth is estimated to be about 4%, following a retreat of roughly 4% in 2020.”
The CoBank 2021 outlook report examines 10 key factors that will shape agriculture and market sectors that serve rural communities throughout the U.S.
Global Economy: Uneven Recovery Ahead
Against all hope that COVID would fade in 2020, it will continue to steer the global economy in 2021. Global economic recovery was very uneven in 2020, and given the current surge in virus cases, we expect that to remain the case in 2021.Our confidence in GDP forecasts has increased since mid-2020, but uncertainties related to the dissemination and uptake of vaccines mean timing the recovery is still exceedingly difficult. Of all major economies, China recovered the fastest from the pandemic and will finish 2020 in remarkably good economic shape while Europe has suffered the most. Perhaps one of the longest lingering impacts from COVID will be the mountains of debt absorbed by most governments around the world.

New Study Shows Consumers Prefer Beef as COVID Keeps Them at Home
|
A recent study of Covid-19’s impact on consumers’ behaviors indicates they are choosing beef more often than before the pandemic.
Clay Burtrum, Stillwater, Okla., rancher and vice chairman of the Federation of State Beef Councils, talks about that study on today’s Beef Buzz.
We’ve seen that consumers intent to eat beef weekly increased from 67 percent to 72 percent compared to 2019, Burtrum said.
The study was conducted by the NCBA to help understand the impact of Covid-19 on consumers.
The good news is that consumers are choosing beef more often as they eat at home, he said.
The Oklahoma rancher has also been part of the 20-member operating committee that makes decisions on where to place the beef checkoff dollars.
The holiday season has become a prime time to push the good news about beef to consumers.
One thing we rolled out in 2019 was the beef drool log video with a rib eye roast turning over an open flame, Burtrum said.
A constant theme is Beef, it’s what’s for the holiday dinner.
Another holiday promotion used this year was running beef ads on the Hallmark TV holiday channel.
This was the first time on TV since 2003, Burtrum said.

OSU's Kim Anderson Explains how the Russian Export Tax could Benefit Oklahoma Farmers
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson talks about the ups and downs of the wheat market, "You go back last Friday when prices were up around 14-15 cents. On Monday, they were down 14 or 15 cents. There's just a lot going on in the market..We're in the holiday time period, so we're going to see days when there's more sellers than buyers, and prices will go down, and days when there's more buyers than sellers. Now, what's been going on this week was Russia announced that they're going to put in a export tax of about 82 cents a bushel on their wheat On the January or February through June time period. I thought that would have a relatively good impact on the prices, when you're going up you're up, and when you're going down you're down."

Japan's Highest Civilian Order Awarded to Former USMEF CEO Philip M. Seng
|
The Government of Japan has announced that Philip M. Seng has been named a recipient of the 2020 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Seng is to receive "The Order of the Rising Sun," which is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in areas such as international relations and promotion of Japanese culture.
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended Seng, former president & CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), for his contributions to "strengthening Japan-U.S. economic relations, particularly in the meat field, and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the United States."
"I am honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award from the Japanese government," said Seng. "However, the recognition should primarily go to the many Japanese colleagues who mentored me along the way, and to the numerous Japanese individuals and companies who introduced and championed U.S. meat products in Japan."

Winter Storms Bring Some Drought Relief But Much of The Western And Southwestern Regions Are Still Suffering
|
Improvement is the key word in this week’s U.S. Drought Monitor map update as winter storms raked the country, adding much needed moisture to the southwest, southern Great Plains and lower Midwest.
The winter wheat crop desperately needs some help and many fields in the central and southern High Plains received ample amounts of heavy, wet snow.
We did see some drought intensification in the south Texas Plains and Hill Country where warm, dry conditions persisted. In these regions 90-day precipitation deficits have ranged from 2 to 8 inches.
Conditions improved in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle regions due to the winter storm events.
Southwest Kansas and northeast Wyoming also benefited from the winter storms.
However, much more precipitation is needed as major areas of the southwest and western U.S. are covered in shades of drought and an estimated 83.8 million people are currently living with drought conditions.
To view the U.S. Drought map, click here.
For Oklahoma, the snowstorms reduced drought coverage from 56.95 percent last week to just 45.78 percent this week.

Trump Administration Highlights Record Levels of Investment in 2020 to Build Rural American Prosperity
|
Dr. Lee Denney, United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development State Director, highlighted some of the investments made during 2020 that build prosperity and strengthen rural communities and businesses in Oklahoma.
Dr. Denney said, “Despite the challenges that 2020 presented, the Oklahoma Rural Development team did an outstanding job. We assisted rural Oklahomans with safe affordable housing, access to water and wastewater, and essential community facilities. We invested in rural businesses to help retain and grow employment opportunities in rural Oklahoma. We worked to improve existing rural broadband and to extend service to rural areas that do not have access to broadband. I am proud of the Oklahoma Rural Development team and the funding that they have brought to rural Oklahoma. When rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
Rural Development Oklahoma obligated over $740 million in loans and grants across all programs in fiscal year 2020.
Here are some
Oklahoma highlights:
Improving Rural Infrastructure
· Invested over $92.9 million in 3 projects to upgrade or build electric infrastructure.
· Invested more than $45.5 million in direct and guaranteed loan and grant funds for 17 projects to expand access to safe drinking water and improve wastewater management systems.

Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Announces 2021 Executive Committee Members
|
The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef has announced the results of the 2021 GRSB Executive Committee election.
A Texas rancher continues to lead this international beef group:
President
Bob McCan, McFaddin Enterprises, USA
Bob will be starting his second term as President of GRSB. He oversees the cattle operations and recreational hunting and wildlife operations for his family’s company, McFaddin Enterprises, Ltd. in Victoria, Refugio, and Bee Counties, Texas. Using rotational grazing on native rangeland, the family strikes a balance that meets the needs of both livestock and wildlife, benefiting both. The ranches are stocked with Victoria cattle, a commercial cross-bred of three-fourths Hereford and one fourth Brahman with a uniform Hereford coloring
McCan has been serving his fellow cattle producers for decades- he was President of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers from 2003 to 2005- and then served as the President of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in 2014-2015.

The Biden Climate Change Team Has Been Rolled Out
|
It is expected that January 20, 2021 will be a date that will mean huge changes in the rules and regs that you might call collectively Climate Change- President Elect Joe Biden touted his team that will lead the charge on Climate Change- and the question folks in our industry must ask- will modern production ag have a seat at the table?
About a week ago- it was signaled that Biden will nominate Tom Vilsack to be his Secretary of Agriculture- but Mr. Vilsack was not mentioned as one of the Climate Change players in the Biden News Release that came out late last night.
Two names that I will bring to your attention this morning that are highlighted in the Biden release (available here) is Michael Regan from North Carolina who will be nominated to be EPA Administrator and former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, who will head up the newly formed White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy, where she will drive an “all of government” approach to combating climate change.
We reached out to Roy Lee Lindsey, who is leaving Oklahoma at the end of the year to become the Executive Director of the North Carolina Pork Council- that group has had first hand dealings with Regan- the comment they released yesterday that Lindsey provided to us was not a ringing endorsement:
"Secretary Regan made a point to educate himself about our industry and issues. He visited our farms and listened carefully to our concerns. While we don’t always agree, we respected each other and shared a commitment to clean water, clean air and economic progress for everyone."
As for McCarthy- among her accomplishments was WOTUS- and you know how beloved that policy was among the farm and ranch community(by and large).
Buckle Up- It's going to be a wild ride.
