Union Mutual was chartered in 1938 to write property and casualty insurance in the state of Oklahoma. Over the years, Union Mutual has maintained the attitude that started the company and continue to be that company that understands Oklahomans’ insurance needs when they contact any member of the UMIC team.
In poor economic times, in times when national insurance companies either stopped writing or completely left the state, Union Mutual has been there for Oklahomans. Today, Union Mutual writes insurance in all 77 counties of Oklahoma through almost 300 agency locations. These agents provide prompt and reliable quotes for most lines of insurance. Just recently, UMIC launched a new product in the preferred market space that has seen unprecedented growth with our rural customer base and falls in line with our Company mantra of “Protection not Politics”, when meeting the needs of our consumers and agents.
Monica Collison took over as CEO of Union Mutual in May of 2019. Under her leadership and through the hard work of her Union team, the company has continued to see positive results and productive growth with profit throughout the state of Oklahoma. Union Mutual offers a wide variety of coverage options for Oklahomans. For 82 years, Union Mutual has led the way to protect all of Oklahoma.

12 Teams of Oklahoma Cowboys Compete in Five Events to Raise Money for the Children’s Hospital
|
Twelve teams of real Oklahoma ranch cowboys will compete in five different events mirroring many of the activities of daily ranch life this weekend at the Lazy E Arena. Performances will be held on Friday, Aug. 20 and Saturday, Aug. 21 at.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for shopping in the trade show and the performance begins nightly at 7 p.m.
The competition is fierce, but the cowboys do not take home much more than bumps and bragging rights. They participate with one goal: to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation (CHF).
Associate farm Director KC Sheperd spoke with OCA's Weston Givens and he said this is a worthy cause, "“CHF has been the benefitting charity of the event since 1997 and in that time the OCA Ranch Rodeo has raised more than $553,000.00 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation,” said Givens. “When you purchase a ticket to the OCA Ranch Rodeo, you are supporting Oklahoma children and their families.”
CHF funds children’s medical research and treatment for children right here in Oklahoma. The funds raised for CHF in Oklahoma, stay in Oklahoma.
“So, bring the family for a fun evening, cheer on your favorite ranch team and know that you are supporting a worthy cause,” Givens said.

OSU's Kim Anderson Believes Volatile Wheat Prices Mean American Producers Have an Opportunity to Profit
|
Lower than expected global wheat production numbers are making wheat prices go up, according to Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst, Dr. Kim Anderson.
In the past month-and-a-half, wheat prices have moved $1.80, with the average price being $6.07, Anderson said. Right now, prices are at $5.80, but Anderson said American wheat Farmers have an opportunity to use this volatile market to their advantage.
“Given the volatility in this market I don’t think you can do a one-and-done sale,” Anderson said. “I think you have got to stagger your sales.”
Anderson advises wheat farmers that if they need to sell in a month, sell a quarter of their harvest each week instead. He also said to do the same if you plan on selling over a longer period.

Iconic Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. Brand Stands the Test of Time
|
As the Beef Checkoff celebrates its 35th anniversary, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, is shining a light on the successful promotion and research programs that drive the demand for beef. Nothing epitomizes the Beef Checkoff more than the iconic Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner.® brand.
From celebrity voices and images of sizzling steaks on the grill, to the familiar “Rodeo” music composed by Aaron Copland, the sights and sounds of the brand are recognized by generations of consumers. As a proud contractor to the Beef Checkoff, NCBA has managed the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. consumer marketing program for more than 27 years, inspiring people to purchase and enjoy beef.
“What has made the brand so successful over the years is the ability to adapt based on changing consumer demographics,” said Becca McMillan, Oklahoma producer and co-chair of the Domestic Marketing Checkoff Committee. “It truly has provided producers, like me, a voice and an opportunity to connect with consumers."

American National Cattle Women: The Cattle Industry’s Boots on the Ground
|
When it comes to promoting beef in the U.S., American National Cattle Women are not only thinking about the future, but also outside the box.
ANCW president, Evelyn Greene, spoke with me at the 2021 Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Conference about what it takes to truly support National Beef Cattle producers.
“We are boots on the ground for the cattlemen,” Greene said. “We want to be that positive note for the beef industry with everyone we come into contact with.”
Some of the ways ANCW members focus on beef promotion, education and legislation is through a collegiate beef advocacy group, a Women in Ranching, Education and
Development program and a story-reading program for K-12 students.
“We have books virtually read, which are available online for teachers,” Greene said. “As we all know, COVID had that impact of having everything virtual.”
Greene said COVID-19 further proved that many people are connecting to the world via social media and ANCW leadership is not missing out on the opportunities these platforms provide to reach consumers.
“We need to let consumers know that our beef has not changed – it is still very nutritious,” Greene said. “You have to learn how to develop around some of the theories out there while sticking to your passion.”

USDA Adopts Market Transparency Policies Backed by NCBA
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS) announced today that it will begin publishing a National Daily Direct Formula Base Cattle report, which will provide greater information into the foundational prices used in cattle market formulas, grids, and contracts, and a National Weekly Cattle Net Price Distribution report, which will show the volume of cattle purchased at each different level of pricing within those formulas, grids, and contracts. NCBA has long urged USDA to adopt policies that increase transparency in the cattle markets and applauds this effort to provide producers greater insight into cattle transactions.
“USDA’s announcement is a significant step toward increasing transparency in the cattle markets,” said NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane. “As Livestock Mandatory Reporting awaits congressional reauthorization, it is encouraging to see the Administration taking proactive steps to broaden the scope of this critical information tool. NCBA remains committed to maximizing market transparency and looks forward to building on this momentum to shed more light on the fed cattle trade.”
The formula bucket is a catch-all for transactions which do not fit the definition of either a negotiated cash, negotiated grid, or contract trade. Most formula pricing agreements utilize a base price from which premiums are added and discounts subtracted. However, the base prices for these transactions are determined through means other than direct, buyer-seller negotiation. The National Daily Direct Formula Base Cattle report will share national base price information of formula agreements. The National Weekly Cattle Net Price Distribution will report what levels (price and volume) trade occurred across the weekly weighted average price for each purchase type – negotiated, negotiated grid, formula, and forward contract. The addition of these new publications will allow producers to better compare their marketing arrangement to others and allow them to make more informed business decisions on their operations.

Groups Against the Beef Checkoff Given an Extra 90 Days to Get Signatures to Force an Up or Down Vote on Program
|
Organizers of an effort to collect enough signatures to force a producer vote on whether or not to continue the dollar a head Beef Checkoff that began during the Pandemic in July of 2020 have now used the pandemic as justification to extend the collection time for effectively 90 days- the new deadline is now October 3rd, as granted by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
The South Dakota Livestock Auction Markets Association and Steve Stratford of Kansas-based Stratford Angus organized and initiated the National Beef Checkoff Petition Drive that began July 2, 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) originally established a 12-month period for the collection of the required 88,269 signatures.
R-CALF USA and other groups have helped to collect signatures but due to COVID-19-related restrictions, were unable to even meet with cattle producers for several months in locations such as livestock auction yards and public meeting places. As a result, the organizers and assisting groups were principally relegated to relying upon an online petition site to collect signatures. That site, located at www.checkoffvote.com , currently has 18,790 signed petitions.
