AFBF and NPPC File Prop. 12 Appeal to Supreme Court
|
Yesterday, the National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take their case against California’s Proposition 12, which would ban the sale of pork from hogs that don’t meet the state’s “arbitrary” production standards.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, Prop. 12 will prohibit the sale of pork from hogs whose mothers (sows) were raised - anywhere in the world - in pens that do not comply with California’s highly prescriptive housing standards. It applies to any uncooked pork sold in the state, whether produced there or outside its borders. Nearly all pork currently produced in the United States fails to meet California’s arbitrary standards.
To continue selling pork to the 40 million consumers who live in California, which represents about 15% of the U.S. pork market, pork producers would need to switch to alternative sow housing systems.

Latest Cattle on Feed Report Shows Some Regions of the Country are More Current Than Others
|
On Friday, the USDA released the latest Cattle on Feed report. For more than a year, fed cattle have outnumbered U.S. beef processing facilities’ slaughter capacity, creating a bottleneck. To help break down the latest report, we sat down with Senior Vice President of Food and Agricultural Research, Animal Protein at Rabo AgriFinance Don Close.
“Initial reaction to the report - I would not go so far as to say it is bearish, but it is certainly a disappointment. A lot of, including our light placement estimates, were down 2 - 2.5%.
"If you look at the … state breakdown of where these cattle were placed, we saw a very aggressive placement of cattle in the western states. We did see enough of an increase in the Corn Belt … it is bearish up there, but not as much as the West. In the Plains states - Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico - we saw a measurable decline.”
He said when you look at the report from that context, the numbers are not what analysts expected, but not as bleak as folks may think.

OSU's Derrell Peel Says Fed Cattle Supplies are Tightening, Beginning to Show in Feedlots
|
Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist Derrell Peel offers his expertise on the cattle industry. This is a part of the weekly series known as the "Cow-Calf Corner" published electronically by OSU Extension Specialists. Today, Peel talks about U.S. feedlot numbers as detailed in last Friday's Cattle on Feed Report
“The report pegged Sept. 1 feedlot inventories at 11.2 million head. August marketings were 1.8 million head and August placements were 2.1 million head. August placements and marketings were both slightly higher than average pre-report estimates but within the range of analyst forecasts.
“The question for several months has been when feedlots would 'turn the corner' on the large fed cattle supplies and set the stage for improving fed cattle prices. It always seems to take longer than it should. However, there are indications of continued progress along those lines. It appears the feedlots are slowly getting more current.
“Going forward, the expectation is that fed cattle supplies will continue to tighten and drop below the slaughter capacity cap that has separated the fed market from beef markets."

Diamond Hats President Rachel Pickens Believes Raising Money for Youth is Paying it Forward
|
Each year, the Diamond Hats Gala raises several thousand dollars for OYE. This year, I talked with the 2021 President of Diamond Hats Rachel Pickens on the sidelines of the Gala as we waited for Clay Walker to take the stage on Saturday night.
Rachel told me that her show experience as a youth has made a difference in her life- "it built something inside of me that I have never forgotten long after I walked out of that show ring" and she attributes those lessons learned in her life as a catalyst to becoming a successful business woman today. So- giving back and supporting the 4-H and FFA youth who exhibit in our major state show event, the Oklahoma Youth Expo, has been an easy choice. She believes it provides these future citizens a base for their lives that will make a difference in our state and nation.
Her group that organized the Gala, the Diamond Hats, was able to raise $275,000 this year- a record and she explained to us what exactly that money funds.
"(All the organizations) get together long before the sale happens at the Oklahoma Youth Expo," Pickens said. "We make sure that without a doubt, those kids that are making it to that top level in our state ... are going to walk away with a set premium amount."
Pickens said this year, the gala saw more sponsorships than ever before.
"We have had more sponsorships than we ever have before," Pickens said.
With all the support, Pickens said it is no wonder why OYE continues to be one of the greatest youth stock shows in the country.

Committee Considers Avenues to Utilize Burns Flat
|
Rep. Tammy Townley hosted an interim study Friday morning before the House Government Modernization Committee, to consider avenues to help Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA) reach its full potential as a competitive industrial authority.
The Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA) is a development authority created in 1999 to operate a 2,700 spaceport near Burns Flat. The Oklahoma Air & Space Port and Aerospace Industrial Park at Clinton-Sherman Airport (CSM) features the fourth largest all-weather runway in North America at 13,503 feet long, an adjacent 5,193-foot runway and facilities that include an air traffic control tower, six large hangars and 96 acres of pavement for parking and storage.
The opportunities presented by the facilities at Burns Flat offers a lot of potential.
According to data from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, aviation and aerospace is the state’s second largest industry with more than 206,000 jobs and an economic impact of $43.7 billion annually.

Been Missing Your Beef Buzz Podcast??? It's Back!!!
|
In the middle of summer- our daily automatic posting of our Beef Buzz feature as a Podcast on weekday mornings suddenly stopped.
We two other regular Podcasts that we have offered for years- along with the Beef Buzz- that kept working and posted just fine. But not the Beef Buzz.
The last Podcast that was there was dated July 30th.
Well, it took a lot of "under the hood" work but our tech folks(David Gerstman) finally jumped through all the hoops that apparently Apple was demanding without bothering to tell us- and yesterday afternoon- the AWOL episodes showed up.
So- if you have been a subscriber to the Beef Buzz Podcast- you should be able to see the episodes from now back to well past July 30th- and we believe they will post daily as they are supposed to going forward.
If you have not subscribed to the Beef Buzz Podcast- now is a great time to do so. It typically runs five to six minutes or so and covers a significant story of the day for the beef industry.
The buttons below will take you to the Beef Buzz, Daily Farm News and the Ag Perspectives Podcast sign up page- and you can search for the three Podcasts in your Apple Podcasts app as well.
