CBB's Jimmy Taylor Says Beef Checkoff Dollars Tell the Beef Story
|
Right now, the Annual Convention for the National Association of Farm Broadcasting is going on in Kansas City, Mo. KC Sheperd, associate farm director for the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, spoke with Jimmy Taylor, Oklahoma cattle producer and secretary-treasurer for the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, at the event about what the Beef Checkoff does for cattle producers.
“The beef checkoff does so much with the dollars that are paid into it,” Taylor said. “I consider it an investment; it does things that I could not do myself. One thing that comes to (my) mind is the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative,” Taylor said. “There are 72-million people up there - more people than there are cows. Some of our dollars from Oklahoma go up there to help educate those people (about beef).”
Teaching people about beef keeps it top of mind for consumers, he added. Not all folks in the cattle industry understand or appreciate CBB efforts though. A question Taylor said he often gets is why CBB members do not do anything about the state of cattle markets.
“That gets into policy,” Taylor said. “It is against the law for us to participate in that, based on the Beef Promotion and Research Act … our job is to create beef demand; that is our focus and that is what we do with those dollars.”

Drought Monitor Report Shows Drought Conditions Continue to Yo-yo in Oklahoma
|
According to data as of Nov. 10 to Nov. 16, 2021, drought conditions in Oklahoma have slightly deteriorated. The largest change was with extreme drought conditions or worse, which more than doubled since last week’s Drought Monitor report. Severe drought conditions or worse deteriorated, changing from 10.8% to 11.1%. Moderate drought conditions or worse increased from 36.7% to 37.2%. Abnormally dry conditions or worse increased from 77.27% to 77.34%. You can click on the map above to get more details on drought conditions in the state.
Cimarron County is feeling the worst of drought conditions. Extreme drought conditions are also reported in Beaver, Harper and Woods counties. Severe drought conditions remain in the Panhandle, northwest and southwest areas in the state and the Tulsa area.
The 6-to-10-day precipitation outlook map shows southern Oklahoma is likely to receive above-normal precipitation, while northern Oklahoma is set to receive normal amounts of precipitation. The 6-to-10-day temperature outlook map shows Oklahomans can expect higher-than-normal temperatures in the western half of the state, while the eastern half will see normal temperatures for this time of year.

NCBA's Ethan Lane on The Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act
|
The Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act is a compromise of Price Discovery bills that have been filed by Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Deb Fischer of Nebraska. Their goal is to return fairness to the cattle marketplace dominated by four major meatpackers by way of trade mandates and supplying more information to cattle producers.
Ethan Lane, vice president of Government Affairs for the NCBA, told us the NCBA has the policy to support aspects of this bill like the cattle contract library, but do not have the policy to support a government mandate on how producers market their cattle.
According to Lane, the newly proposed bill puts a cap on the highest level on minimum trade that could be established by the USDA secretary in a region based on and tied to the lowest trade in any one region. Meaning, based on low cash-trade numbers in states like Colorado and Texas, states like Iowa would have to only mandate cash trade in about 30% of their total sales.
“This feels more like an effort to redistribute (alternative marketing agreement) use throughout the five areas, rather than to cap it and encourage more cash trade,” Lane said.

National Livestock, All American Beef Battalion Fund Raiser November 22nd
|
The All American Beef Board is made up of cattle-industry members devoted to fostering an appreciation, respect and honor for American military service members whose sacrifices have, and will continue to make, our freedoms possible, one steak at a time.
Each year, the National Livestock Companies, in partnership with Oklahoma National Stockyards and the Oklahoma City Livestock Exchange, host a fundraiser that helps AABB’s efforts. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the event from going forward last year. Jon Rich, president of the National Livestock Credit Corps, told us about coming back this year.
“Our plan is to provide a feed for the buyers and other folks who will be out there,” Rich said. “We are expecting a good fund raiser.”
The fund-raising event is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 22, in the sale arena of the Stockyards, just a couple of days before Thanksgiving. Rich said the timing is strategic, hoping the holiday spirit will encourage donators to give.

OSU's Kim Anderson Says Grain Prices Should Not Move Much as Holidays Begin
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson says as most harvests wrap up in Oklahoma and the holiday season approaches, there is not much going on.
Anderson said during the holidays grain markets begin to get thin. As that happens, when a mass of sales flood the market, prices are driven down. The opposite happens when buying happens.
Some advice Anderson said he continues to give to producers is to stagger sales. He suggests producers who still have wheat or soybeans stagger sales over the next month or so. Corn usually rallies in the spring, so save some for when those prices hit, he said.
“This year’s world harvest is essentially complete,” Anderson said. “I do not see many reasons for prices to go higher.”
As for cotton, he said he does not know why anyone would hold cotton when prices are so high.

EPA and Army Take Action to Provide Certainty for the Definition of WOTUS
|
Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of the Army (the agencies) announced a proposed rule to re-establish the pre-2015 definition of “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) which had been in place for decades, updated to reflect consideration of Supreme Court decisions.
“In recent years, the only constant with WOTUS has been change, creating a whiplash in how to best protect our waters in communities across America,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said. “Through our engagement with stakeholders across the country, we’ve heard overwhelming calls for a durable definition of WOTUS that protects the environment and that is grounded in the experience of those who steward our waters. Today’s action advances our process toward a stronger rule that achieves our shared priorities.”
“The Army recognizes the importance of our nation’s water resources and the role water plays in our communities across the nation,” Jaime A. Pinkham, acting assistant secretary of the army for civil works, said. “We remain committed to working with EPA to develop a rule that is informed by our experience and expertise, as well as that of our co-regulators, is mindful of implementation practices, and is shaped by the lived experience of local communities and stakeholders.”
Recent court decisions have reinforced the need for a stable and certain definition of WOTUS.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is the main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd talks with Jed Green, the founder of the group ORCA- Oklahomans for Responsible Cannabis Action. They discuss the problems that have developed in rural Oklahoma because of the explosive growth of medical marijuana production in the state- and of the need for better regulation of the industry- as well as recognition of the economic benefits Green believes are a part of the arrival of this industry- especially in areas where legal operations are being established.
