Drought Maps Show Some Improvement As Several Storms Moved Across The Country This Past Week
|
Precipitation in the form of rain, snow and a mixture of both were contained in several Pacific weather systems that floated across the U.S. this past week.
Western parts of Texas remained dry while a half an inch or more of rain fell across other parts of the region. Two inches or more fell across southern Texas.
Moderate to extreme drought expanded in other parts of Texas and exceptional drought grew in western Texas.
Meanwhile, heavy, wet snow fell across the Texas Panhandle, northwest Oklahoma and southwest Kansas at midweek.
Before the latest storms, the USDA had pegged topsoil moisture short or very short across 61 percent of Texas, and 43 percent of Oklahoma.
In addition, 83 percent of the topsoil moisture in Colorado was short to very short.
The USDA had ranked the winter wheat crop condition the lowest since 2012.

For Oklahoma, there continue to be two persistent areas of extreme drought (D3) adding color to the map. Those areas, which include Cimarron County in the Panhandle and Harmon County in the southwest could lose some of that color on the next update as this week’s storms could help ease some of the dryness.

Adding Value To Cattle Pays Off at The Market Says Danny Jones, Superior Livestock
|
Cattle producers have learned adding value to their herds through vaccination programs and improved bloodlines pays off in the marketplace. Danny Jones, president of Superior Livestock, talks about that strategy on today’s Beef Buzz.
Superior Livestock was established in 1987 and is the leader of online video satellite auctions. They sold 1.38 million head last year and 2020 sales are expected to exceed that number.
Jones talked about the Superior Livestock philosophy during the recent 2020 Stockmanship and Stewardship virtual conference.
The value-added aspect of cattle sold by Superior has gradually raised the bar for determining premiums, Jones said.
We used to use the standard of unvaccinated cattle to compare the premiums, he said.
Today, Jones said most producers vaccinate cattle.
I do believe it is going to be more of a must especially If you have spring calves marketed in the fall those vaccinations are going to be more important, Jones said.

Peterson, Roberts, Conaway and Lucas to Reflect on Time in Congress, Ag Committee’s 200 Years
|
House Agriculture Chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman and former House Agriculture Committee Chair Pat Roberts of Kansas, and former House Agriculture Committee Chairmen Mike Conaway of Texas and Frank Lucas of Oklahoma will sit down Friday, December 4, for a discussion of their time in Congress and reflection on the 200th Anniversary of the Committee.
As he departs, Chairman Peterson is bringing together the other former Chairs of the House Committee on Agriculture who are still serving in Congress.
While COVID-19 scaled back the ability to fully celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Committee on the Hill and with the public, the group wanted to share some of the plans underway as well as their recollections from their time serving as chairman.
This will be a dialogue and discussion among Chair Peterson, Chair Conaway, Chair Lucas and Chair Roberts as three of the four depart Congress. Only Oklahoma's Lucas will remain- altho he currently is not on the Ag Committee- but rather will be top Republican again on the Science Committee in 2021.

Gathering Agricultural Statistics Important For Everyone Says Joe Prusaki, NASS
|
Some people may consider statistics boring but Joe Prusaki, director of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) operations division, said they provide a snapshot at any given time what is happening with food and fiber production in this country. Plus, a whole lot more.
Prusaki was recently interviewed by Radio Oklahoma Agriculture Network Associate Farm Director and Editor KC Sheperd.
NASS is a small agency with fewer than 1,000 employees within the USDA, he said.
We’re the folks who provide crop production statistics, Prusaki said.
We get information from FSA and satellite images to determine planted acres, he noted.
He added NASS also provides monthly and quarterly livestock surveys for inventory, cattle on feed and grains stocks.
From fruits and nuts in California to eggs in Iowa, we do a lot of different agricultural statistics as a service to agriculture, he said.
The NASS official specifically mentioned several surveys of interest to Oklahoma producers.

Livestock Groups Congratulate Westerman On HNR Leadership Selection
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) and the Public Lands Council (PLC) today released the following statement on the selection of Rep. Bruce Westerman to be the House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member:
“Congratulations to Congressman Westerman for being chosen to lead his peers on the Natural Resources Committee. His forestry background and knowledge of unique public lands issues has always been a great benefit to livestock producers who rely on sound land management policy," said NCBA Executive Director of Natural Resources and PLC Executive Director Kaitlynn Glover. "He knows that ranchers and farmers are good stewards of our nation's resources and he knows how important it is that these farmers and ranchers are involved in the policy-making process. We are thrilled to continue working with him as he steps into this new leadership role.”
“We have enjoyed working with Congressman Thompson and his team for years. GT has been a vocal and effective advocate for the needs of dairy farmers in Pennsylvania and throughout the country,” said Jim Mulhern, NMPF president and CEO. “He also has a keen understanding of the need to build a vibrant rural economy to sustain a safe, abundant, and affordable food supply to nourish our country and our planet.”

Lucas Returns as Republican Leader of Science, Space, Technology Committee
|
Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) released the following statement after being re-elected by his colleagues as the Republican Leader of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology for the 117th Congress:
“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to continue leading House Science Committee Republicans in the 117th Congress,” Lucas said. “This is a crucial time for America’s scientific and technological progress. We’re facing a growing threat from China, which seeks to outpace us through whatever means necessary, and we have a responsibility to protect taxpayer-funded research from foreign theft. We also have the opportunity to encourage the next generation of clean energy technologies, which will lower energy prices for Americans while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We’re poised to return humans to the Moon for the first time in a generation, and to plan historic crewed missions to Mars. Every day we’re seeing new discoveries and leaps forward in fields from supercomputing, to vaccine development, to weather prediction. There has never been a more exciting time for science in America, and I’m eager to work with my colleagues to support our research enterprise.”
In his tenure as Ranking Member, Lucas has focused on keeping America at the cutting edge of scientific and technological development through investment in basic federal research. His priority legislation, the Securing American Leadership in Science and Technology Act (SALSTA), would double funding for basic research and strategically focus on industries of the future like artificial intelligence, quantum sciences, and advanced manufacturing. Lucas pledged to continue this work in the next Congress.

AND Finally- I Have Been Challenged in Give a Ham
|
For the second Christmas Holiday Season- I have been challenged by someone in the Pork Industry's Give a Ham campaign. You may have heard various folks within the agricultural arena challenge others to step up and Give a Ham to a charity of their choice.
My Challenge has come from Executive Vice President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, Michael Kelsey. Kelsey was earlier challenged by Roy Lee Lindsey, the Executive Director of the OkPork. Kelsey, being the cowboy that he is, responded to Roy Lee and decided to donate 15 pounds of HAM Burger to the Ronald McDonald House in Oklahoma City.
Kelsey challenged yours truly as well as Oklahoma Labor Secretary, Leslie Osborn.
I will announce my charity of choice and who I plan on challenging the first of next week- Stay Tuned!!!
