Below Zero Temps and More Snow Coming- Our Tuesday AM Greeting to All in Oklahoma
|
I'm sorry I did not grab a snapshot of it earlier this morning- but shortly after 4 am this morning- EVERY SINGLE Oklahoma Mesonet station had a minus sign in front of their temperatures- ALL of them- this snapshot at 5:40 am shows the hot spots in the state to be Goodwell and Boise City at 2 above- and Hollis checking in at 1 above. (You can click the map above and see the current Mesonet Air Temp map in real time- which is updated every 5 minutes)
The coldest spot most of the morning as I have been producing out radio reports and finishing this email has been Lake Carl Blackwell- in this graphic above- they are at 20 below.
In this brutal stretch of cold- this will be the coldest morning- and many records are being set this morning at locations across the state- however, the all time record of 31 below zero in Nowata a few years back will not be broken.
Add to the misery- I suspect you have heard that we have a second Winter Storm Warning that is proclaiming yet another major snow event roaring straight at the southeastern three fourths of Oklahoma- starting later today- and will feature snow this afternoon, overnight and into Wednesday. Biggest snow totals are likely to be in southeastern Oklahoma- ten inches or even a little more- while the bulk of Oklahoma at a second dose of four to eight inches of the fluffy white stuff.
Northwest Oklahoma and the Panhandle only have a winter storm advisory and can expect one to three inches of snow.
In advance of the cold and more snow- the State of Oklahoma has told state employees- if you are not involved in essential tasks- your duties are suspended til midnight tonight- click on the button below and read the actual statement issued last night.

AFR/OFU Elects Leadership, Conducts Business in First Partially Virtual Convention
|
American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) hosted the organization’s 116th annual state convention at the Embassy Suites & Conference Center - Norman Feb. 12-13. The event was virtual, with the exception of in-person adoption of AFR/OFU legislative policy and officer elections.
“This year’s event is unlike any previous convention,” said AFR/OFU Cooperative President Scott Blubaugh. “While we can’t bring everyone together this year, we’re glad to find a format that allows us to take care of necessary business and elect organization leadership.”
This year, member delegates voted on two contested seats on the AFR/OFU Board of Directors-Northwest District 1 Agent Director and Southwest District 2 Independent Director. Additionally, the seats AFR/OFU Southeast District 4 Agent Director and OFU Vice President were filled by candidates who ran unopposed.
In the race for Northwest District 1 Agent Director Director, incumbent Kyndell Nichols, Ringwood, was defeated by challenger John Porter, Edmond. Porter is the former OFU Vice President.
Porter is a third-generation AFR Insurance agent with more than 35 years with AFR/OFU. He served as AFR/OFU Cooperative Vice President from 2010 to 2021, opting not to run for re-election this year. He attended the University of Central Oklahoma, was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard, has been inducted into the Oklahoma Softball Hall of Fame as a player, and is a retired Oklahoma High School basketball and football referee.

Re-warming Methods for Severely Cold-stressed Newborn Calves
|
Dr. Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist, offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the "Cow Calf Corner" published electronically by Dr. Peel and Dr. Glenn Selk. Today, Dr. Selk talks about re-warming Methods for newborn Calves.
The extreme cold and snowy weather have arrived at a very unfortunate time for spring calving cow herds. Cows and heifers are beginning the calving season and some newborn calves are certain to be cold stressed after arrival. Getting those cold stressed calves back to normal body temperatures as soon as possible will save the lives of some calves and increase the vigor of others.
Several years ago, an Oklahoma rancher called to tell of the success he had noticed in using a warm water bath to revive new born calves that had been severely cold stressed. A quick check of the scientific data on that subject bears out his observation.

Genomic EPDs on Display at Express Ranches Spring Bull Sale March 5th
|
The annual spring bull sale at Express Ranches in Yukon is scheduled for March 5 and Jarold Callahan, president of Express Ranches, said they use the latest technology to deliver the best animal for the commercial cattlemen.
All the bulls we sell have genomically enhanced EPD’s, he said
It means we pull blood on these calves, beginning at three months of age, and that indicates the animal’s genomics and their ability to transmit those genetics to their offspring, Callahan said.
It’s very powerful, he said.
When we sell a bull it’s like that bull had already sired a calf crop, depending on the trait, somewhere between 8 and 22 calves, Callahan said.
It should give that commercial cowman added confidence that he is going to reduce calving problems, produce an efficient animal and get what he needs, Callahan said.
You don’t have to study the individual percentiles on genomics, all you have to do is look at the individual EPDs, Callahan said
