Peanuts: Still a Profitable Crop for a Small Select Number of Growers in Oklahoma |
Back in the days of the peanut quota program- there were well over 100,000 acres of peanuts being grown annually in Oklahoma. But, the peanut quota buy out changed all that.
Dr. Ron Scholar, executive director of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, talked with KC Sheperd at the recent Hydro multi crop field day about what the reality of peanut production is today here in Oklahoma.
Annually, Scholar said about 100 peanut farmers produce about 15,000 acres under contract, yielding an average of 4,000 pounds of peanuts per acre, according to Scholar. Being a peanut farmer is not easy, it takes dedication, he added.
“They are top-notch producers,” Scholar said. “Peanuts are too expensive to grow for any reason other than money.”
Thanks to science and hardworking farmers, peanut varieties are better now than they were just 10 years ago, Scholar said. As peanut harvest season draws closer, the months of hard work peanut farmers put into their tasty crop are about to pay off. According to Scholar, there are some things farmers should be looking out for come harvest.

State Senator Casey Murdock to File Legislation After Findings of Ag Sales Tax Exemption Interim Study |
On the heels of an interim study dedicated to examining Oklahoma’s agricultural sales tax exemption, Sen. Casey Murdock said he is preparing to file a measure ahead of the next legislative session to make it easier for farmers and ranchers to renew their sales tax exemption card.
“After working with the tax commission, I’ve found these changes are working," Murdock said. "There’s no backlog of producers getting their card, and denials are typically because the applicant hasn’t correctly filled out the form. However, we also learned the vast majority of the 110,000 ag sales tax exemption cards issued each year are renewals, so now we need a way to make the renewal process easier and more convenient.”
Murdock said his proposal will include an additional option on the agricultural sales tax exemption application that will allow the farmer or rancher to check a box if the application is a renewal, as well as confirm there’s no change to the agricultural operation from the prior year. If there’s no change, the renewal will be automatic.

USDA Accepts More than 2.5 Million Acres in Grassland CRP Signup, Double Last Year’s Signup |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it has accepted offers for more than 2.5 million acres from agricultural producers and private landowners for enrollment through this year’s Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Signup.
That is double last year’s enrollment and brings the total acres enrolled across all CRP signups in 2021 to more than 5.3 million acres, surpassing USDA’s 4-million-acre goal. Producers and landowners submitted offers for nearly 4 million acres in Grassland CRP, the highest in the signup’s history.
Oklahoma producers enrolled 235,428 acres through this year’s Grassland CRP signup. Through Grassland CRP, producers and landowners can conserve grasslands, rangelands, and pastures, while retaining the right to conduct common grazing practices, such as haying, mowing, or harvesting seed from the enrolled land, pursuant to approved conservation plans designed to promote thoughtful use while creating and maintaining vital habitat.

BI's Dr. Jody Wade Advice to Cattle Producers- Stay Ahead of BRD |
Across Oklahoma, producers are preparing their spring-born calves for weaning as summer fades to fall. Weaning processes can be stressful on cattle, which opens newly weaned calves to illness, specifically Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD). Ron Hays sat down with Dr. Jody Wade, professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, to discuss best practices so producers can stay ahead of BRD.
BRD is defined as a “disease complex,” meaning it is caused by a variety of pathogens and contributed to by stress. BRD affects the lower respiratory tract as pneumonia or the upper respiratory tract as rhinitis, tracheitis or bronchitis.
“BRD has been a huge focus (in the industry),” Wade said. “If we have any sickness as (cattle) go through that food chain, it costs everybody money.”
Wade said the virus is not going to go away. The best way managers can combat its presence in their herds is to stay on top of it and be picky when buying cattle.

NCC Releases Sustainability Report to Recognize Progress and Identify Future Growth Opportunities |
The National Chicken Council (NCC) today released its inaugural sustainability report. The report provides a comprehensive overview of U.S. chickens raised for meat, known as “broilers,” and the industry’s collective progress in its environmental, broiler welfare and social impact journey, as well as efforts to build a more sustainable food system.
Mike Brown, NCC president, said, "we take pride in how our chicken gets from farm to table, but we know that sustainability is a journey of collective successes and growth areas. It's on us as an industry to review our impact and areas of improvement so that we can direct our industry toward a more sustainable future," Brown said. "We invite all consumers to learn how the U.S. chicken industry is producing safe, nutritious and sustainable food. This new report is one resource to help shed light on the sustainable practices behind the food on their table."
- Land use: down 13%
- Greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint): down 18%
- Water consumption: down 13%
- Fossil resources use: down 22%
- Particulate forming emissions: down 22%
Impressive numbers indeed.

NCBA Slams PCRM Complaint |
NCBA, working as a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, recently developed a campaign to transparently share the beef industry’s science-based sustainability story and connect consumers with facts about how their beef is raised. Part of this campaign included very successful ads in Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post.
The campaign reached millions of consumers and inspired curious readers to learn more. Unsurprisingly, the campaign also led to mudslinging from animal activist groups who must grasp at straws because they know that less than 5% of the U.S. population claim to be vegetarian.
PCRM’s attack on these ads conflates global data with U.S. numbers and ignores the growing body of evidence that beef is not an important part of a sustainable food system in the U.S., but also nourishes the land it’s raised on through carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat preservation and more.

Kansas City Southern Accepts Canadian Pacific Merger Agreement |
Kansas City Southern Wednesday announced the termination of a merger agreement with Canadian National Railway. KCS has entered a merger agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway, presumably ending the bidding war for KCS. Kansas City Southern determined the proposal from Canadian Pacific continues to demonstrate a “Company Superior Proposal” under the pending agreement with Canadian National.
Upon closing of Canadian Pacific’s voting trust, each share of KCS common stock will be exchanged for $90 in cash and 2.8 shares of CP common stock. Closing will be subject to approval by the stockholders of Canadian Pacific and KCS and regulatory approvals.
In connection with the termination of the Canadian National merger agreement, KCS is paying CN a breakup fee of $700 million. Kansas City Southern will also return an additional $700 million Canadian National paid to KCS. Kansas City Southern will schedule a new Special Meeting of Stockholders for KCS stockholders to vote on the CP merger agreement.

Wholesale Boxed Beef Prices continue to head sharply lower- Choice Beef was down $3.07 and Select Beef was off $6.73 on Wednesday, September 15th.

OKC West in El Reno had 7,245 head of cattle this week for their Tuesday/Wednesday sales.
Compared to last week: Feeder steers sold fully steady. Feeder heifers traded 2.00-6.00 lower on the plainer offerings. Demand light for heifers, moderate for steers. Steer and heifer calves were to lightly tested for an accurate trend but a lower undertone was noted. Demand moderate. Several strings of calves fresh off the cow on offer today.
