OMMA to Ag Groups- No Authority to Stop Accepting Medical Marijuana Grow Permits
|
In response to the letter from the Oklahoma Agricultural Aviation Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, Oklahoma Dairy Producers Association, Oklahoma Sheriffs’ Association and Oklahoma Soybean Association- Executive Director, Adria Berry of the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority offered the following statement on Tuesday:
"With patient safety at the forefront of OMMA's mission, in my first few weeks as Executive Director, I have already begun to prioritize the issues we will tackle. My highest priority is to hire enough compliance inspectors to catch up on the current inspection backlog. It is a matter of public health and patient safety to ensure every business licensed by OMMA, including grows, is fully inspected.
"I truly appreciate the urgency placed on OMMA by stakeholders in rural Oklahoma and the agricultural industry to fully inspect all grow facilities. It is true that rural Oklahoma has seen an unprecedented uptick in the purchase and lease of land for cannabis farming, as pointed out by the signatories to the letter. Under current statutes, however, we do not have the authority to issue a moratorium on grower licenses, but I look forward to working with legislators and the leaders of your associations to find a solution to these pressing concerns."
Michael Kelsey with the OCA indicated to me that this was not what they would have liked to have received in response from Berry- but that they will now press the need for immediate action with lawmakers.

WestBred Wheat Professional John Fenderson Offers Wheat Planting Best Management Practices
|
‘Tis the season for winter wheat planting. According to the latest USDA Crop Progress Report, 15% of Oklahoma’s 2022 winter wheat crop is already in the ground. Folks planning on raising wheat only for harvest are likely finalizing their planting playbook.
For the estimated 85% waiting to plant winter wheat, I talked with John Fenderson, technical product manager for WestBred, who has a bushel of advice for you.
He said first, producers should know what varieties they are planting, what field they are planting in and the reasoning behind both answers.
Hit the button below to hear more from Fenderson as he talks about winter wheat planting, including equipment preparation, WestBred wheat varieties, weather, pests and diseases.

House to Study Ad Valorem Tax Protest Impact
|
Oklahoma House of Representative members Carl Newton, Dick Lowe, Kenton Patzkowsky and John Pfeiffer will host interim studies Wednesday, exploring the effect of ad valorem tax protests on public schools and county services.
The House Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hear combined Interim Studies, both of which will explore why and how Oklahoma schools are suffering due to not receiving their ad valorem tax proceeds from companies within the oil, gas, and wind sectors.
“This is a growing funding issue that is crippling some of our public schools and counties,” Lowe said. “Our Legislature must soon find a solution.”
During the study, valuation standards and protest procedures will be discussed and reviewed. The cost of the protests to schools, counties and the state will be detailed.

OCA's Michael Kelsey: We Need to Take a Pause on Issuing New Medical Marijuana Grower Permits
|
NOTE- the Ag Groups involved have received a response from Berry- we have it as the top story in this morning's email- see above)
On Friday, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association joined a coalition of organizations requesting Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority Director Adria Berry to adopt a temporary moratorium on issuing new marijuana grower permits. After that- I spoke with OCA Executive Vice President Michael Kelsey on this issue.
The letter to Berry states, “According to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority’s (OMMA) website as of September 3, there were more than 8,600 grower permits issued in the state of Oklahoma.”
“We have got a big problem,” Kelsey said. “This is fundamentally changing the fabric of rural Oklahoma.”
Hit the button below to hear our latest Beef Buzz and learn how medical marijuana growers are affecting rural Oklahoma, why the temporary pause would be beneficial and more.

Part Three of Management Practices for Cows at Weaning with OSU's Mark Johnson
|
Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Breeding Specialist Mark Johnson offers his expertise on cattle management. This is a part of the weekly series known as the "Cow-Calf Corner" published electronically by Paul Beck. Today, Johnson talks about Part III of management practices for cows during weaning.
Regular and consistent performance analysis can help a cow-calf operation:
- Identify where the business has excelled as well as opportunities for improvement.
- Make informed management decisions.
- Formulate goals and monitor progress toward goals.
Several years of analysis of the information collected on the cow herd (covered last week) in addition to accurate cattle inventory records throughout the year, helps producers monitor improvement in financial and production statistics to verify progress made and get a true picture of the ranch’s performance and potential. Check out Part One and Part Two of this story.

Growth Energy Members to Biden: Uphold Your Commitments to Clean Energy
|
During Growth Energy’s virtual fly-in, 87 Growth Energy members sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to stand behind his promise to take clear action on climate change by supporting low-carbon biofuels and upholding the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through strong biofuel blending targets.
Growth Energy's biofuels producers and supporter wrote the following:
“Homegrown biofuels like ethanol reduce carbon emissions by 46% over their full lifecycle, and a recent analysis concludes that if we are to achieve net-zero by 2050, we must use all tools in the toolbox - including biofuels.
“Our industry supports over 300,000 good paying, clean energy jobs across the heartland. If your administration lets refiners replace clean, renewable biofuels with more fossil fuels, it will hinder progress on your ambitious climate agenda, hurt working families and undermine the economic recovery across rural America.”

AFR Delegates Met Virtually With Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe to Talk Ag Issues
|
American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative delegates were online from Oklahoma for the first two days of the 2021 National Farmers Union (NFU) Fall Legislative Fly-In September 21st. Participants lobbied virtually on behalf of the AFR membership.
AFR delegates met one-on-one virtually with Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and with staff members of Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) and Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.). In all three meetings, AFR delegates focused on three areas of priority—competitive markets, rural and agricultural infrastructure and climate and disaster risk protection for farmers and ranchers.
During the congressional meeting with Sen. Jim Inhofe, cattle market issues were top of mind as AFR delegates discussed increasing concerns over industry concentration and anti-competitive practices.
Click on the blue button below to read the interactions that the AFR delegates had with Senator Inhofe and the staff of Congressmen Cole and Hern on Tuesday.
