Producers and Landowners Can Apply for EQIP Conservation Incentive Contracts
|
The Natural Resources and Conservation Conservation Service in Oklahoma is accepting applications from producers and landowners for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program(EQIP) Conservation Incentive Contracts.
CICs address priority resource concerns, including sequestering carbon and improving soil health in high-priority areas. Through these contracts, NRCS works with producers to strengthen the quality and condition of natural resources on their operations using management practices, such as irrigation water management, drainage water management, feed management and residue and tillage management that target resource concerns, including degraded soil and water quality, available water and soil erosion.
The priority resource concern and land use identified by the State Technical Committee for Oklahoma in 2022 is Soil Quality Limitations on Cropland. Eligible management practices to address the resource concern are:
- Conservation Crop Rotation
- Residue and Tillage Management, No Till
- Residue and Tillage Management, Reduced Till

Hay!!! How You Can Improve Your Bottom Line Through Proper Forage Storage
|
While the invention of the round bale has made livestock feeders’ lives much easier, round bales can also translate into more waste when not stored or fed properly. During times like these, when hay is so expensive, proper hay practices
That is why we sat down with Marty New, an Oklahoma State University extension area livestock specialist, to go over some do’s and don’ts of proper hay storage.
“Dr. Peel has shown the numbers over 20 years (and) each year we continually produce more and more forage,” New said. “It has raised a lot of questions about where it is all going. One thing we don’t always account for is the amount of waste. As we see an increase in input prices and forage prices, anything we can do to manage our waste and become more efficient should be our goal.”
First, producers should stack their round bales in rows that go north to south, not east to west, according to New. Next, round bales should never be stored in the shade with a space between rows of at least three feet, he added. By keeping round bales in full sunlight, with plenty of room between for airflow, moisture damage will be mitigated, he added.

Feedback from the 2022 Cattlemen's Congress is Fantastic
|
The 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress is officially in the record books and what a show it was! The 22 sales associated with the show brought in $10.2 million; that is $100,000 more than last year.
Bray Haven, executive vice president of Cattlemen’s Congress, summarized the event for us. He said between the profitability and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from folks who attended the event, a strong show is guaranteed next year.
“People were really excited about some of the changes that we made from the inaugural to this year,” Haven said. “I think we are going to continue to grow.”
Growth was the story of the second Cattlemen’s Congress. The number of different breeds that attended, the number of cattle on the grounds and the dollar value of the breed sales were all stronger this year.
“This year, several of the other shows (Denver and Ft. Worth) are back,” Haven said. “Our entry numbers were very similar to 2021, but we actually showed more cattle in 2022 than we did last year by (about) 750 head.”

Meet State Rep Danny Sterling- Chair of the Oklahoma House Rural Caucus
|
All of the members of the Oklahoma House Rural Caucus represent farmers, ranchers and others who choose to live in the countryside across Oklahoma. But in the case of many of the members of the caucus- they also have suburban and even urban voters that are a part of their districts. A good example is the chairman of the Caucus here in 2022, Rep Danny Sterling of District 27. Sterling's district stretches from the eastern edge of Moore south east down to Konawa in Seminole County.
I caught up with Sterling and other members of the Rural Caucus Tuesday evening during a fundraiser for Caucus members. The lawmaker said he is proud of the wide open spaces that he represents- but that he also works hard to represent those that are in more suburban settings. Regarding his diverse district- "I really enjoy that because that requires me to be very engaged in all issues- not just rural or urban."
Looking ahead to the start of the legislative session- "Probably one of the hot topics this year is the medical marijuana issue and how it affects rural Oklahoma and our constituents- that's something we are very concerned about."

Sen. Pederson Files Bill to Improve Agriculture Tax Exemption Renewal Process
|
Oklahoma State Senator Roland Pederson has filed legislation aimed at cutting through red tape for farmers and ranchers renewing their agricultural sales tax exemption. Pederson said Senate Bill 1655 would simplify the renewal process for those who have already met the initial requirements to qualify for the exemption.
“This was one of the issues we looked at in an interim study held here at the Capitol last fall. Once you’ve been approved for this agricultural sales tax exemption, you have to renew your card every three years,” Pederson, who serves as vice chair of the Senate Agriculture and Wildlife Committee, said. “I heard from farmers and ranchers across Oklahoma who’ve had problems renewing their exemption even though they have previously been approved for it. This will streamline the process for those individuals.”
Currently, every three years an agricultural producer must go through the same application process as those applying for the very first time. SB 1655 would require the Oklahoma Tax Commission to provide a form which producers would simply sign and check a box attesting that they are continuing agricultural production activities in order to receive their permit renewal.
SB 1655 can be considered after the Legislature convenes the 2022 session on Feb. 7.

Beetle Saliva Shows Potential to Create a Natural Antibiotic
|
Oklahoma State University scientists are excited about a brown goo secreted by a rare beetle.
Why all the excitement over bug saliva?
Because it could lead to the creation of a natural antibiotic and meat preservative, according to Wyatt Hoback, associate professor in the OSU Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.
American burying beetles seek out small animal carcasses and work together to bury it in the ground. Afterward, the insects use the resources in the carcass to raise their offspring.
“These beetles secrete a bright brown liquid from their mouth and from their back end, and that brown liquid helps digest part of the carcass but also preserve part of the carcass,” Hoback said.
Hoback has studied the beetle for more than 20 years and contributed to the conservation of this rare species, which was on the endangered species list from 1989 to 2020. Its status changed to “threatened” last year despite scientists’ predictions that the species will die out in Oklahoma and Arkansas within the next 15 to 20 years. The beetle was once found in 35 states but now only exists in six.

North American Meat Institute: State Court Halts Enforcement of Prop 12
|
The North American Meat Institute praised the ruling issued by the Superior Court for Sacramento County in California to halt enforcement of Proposition 12 because the California Department of Food and Agriculture is more than two years late finalizing complicated and costly regulations.
“Judge Arguelles’ decision recognizes the complexity of the pork supply chain and the burdensome and costly provisions of Prop 12,” said President and CEO of the Meat Institute, Julie Anna Potts. “To enforce the law without final regulations leaves the industry unsure of how to comply or what significant changes must be made to provide pork to this critical market.”
The ruling delays enforcement until 180 days after the final rules go into effect.
The North American Meat Institute and its members are opposed to Prop 12 and urged the State of California to delay its implementation of the law due to the risk of criminal sanctions and civil litigation for non-compliance.
