OSU's Kim Anderson, Discusses the impacts Russia’s war with Ukraine will have on Oklahoma Producers
|
This week on SUNUP OSU Crop marketing specialist Dr. Kim Anderson talks about Agriculture in Ukraine. Anderson says if you were to look at Ukraine as a country, you could take Kansas, South Dakota, and North Dakota and put them together and have the same size of Ukraine's 233,000 square miles or 148 million acres.
Anderson said Ukraine does lead the way in some export markets, "If you look at wheat, 18.3 of that million acres goes to wheat production, About a billion bushels a year, five-year average. Corn 12.5 million acres of corn, that's 1.3 billion bushels a year. Barley, 6.6 million acres, 400 million bushels, and then they're also big in Sugar beets. They produced 9.2 million metric tons of sugar beets and sunflower. They're the number one exporter of sunflower oil. They produce 4.4 million metric tons of sunflowers."
Here all of Dr. Anderson's comments now that can be seen this weekend on SUNUP.
You can also check out the SUNUP lineup for this weekend as well.

Drought Continues to Blanket Oklahoma- A Little Rain Arrives
|
The latest Drought Monitor for Oklahoma looks very similar to the map we shared with you last week- with over 91% of the state abnormally dry or in drought- with 86.62% in Moderate Drought or much much worse.
The only number that really changed was the adjustment in the Exceptional Drought category- up two percentage points from a week ago- now standing at 14.42 percent.
You can click on the map above to see all the latest details of Drought Monitor for the state.
We did have a rain system roll in last night- even some pea sized hail at the Hays casa- the map below from the Oklahoma Mesonet gives you a snapshot of the rainfall for the last 24 hours as of 5 AM- you can also click on that map to jump over to the realtime updating version of that map on the Mesonet site.

US Wheat's Vince Peterson- Russian Intervention Fueling Wheat Price Spike- Again
|
Once again, and tragically this time, Russian intervention is the underlying source of dramatic global wheat price volatility- so says Vince Peterson of US Wheat in an analysis what's happening in the global wheat market.
“…We are closely monitoring prices for the most essential social goods such as food, including bread,” said Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin this week about its domestic wheat supply. “Russian grain is in good demand from abroad, and its price is increasing. That said, it is necessary to provide the necessary raw materials, first of all, to the domestic baking industry.”
The Prime Minister made this comment with specific reference to the hyper reaction of global wheat prices to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the immediate impacts of the widespread economic sanctions levied on Russia in response. Yet it spotlights the core tenants of Russia’s protectionist and heavy-handed wheat supply and price control policies. Russian intervention has been front and center since the country first entered the global wheat export trade.
Anyone who does not take the Prime Minister at his word on this sets themselves up for a very disappointing and expensive lesson. Defending Russian domestic supplies and keeping domestic prices low by withholding supplies from the world will always be their primary wheat policy weapon. And they deploy it without regard for the harm and expense it creates for anyone.

Noble Research Institute Continues to Develop Its Regenerative Ranching Strategy
|
Sustainability is a big focus right now, from the White House to rural America. In the beef industry, sustainability takes place at the ranch management level - literally in the grassroots. I recently had a chance to down and talk with Hugh Aljoe of the Noble Research Institute about Regenerative Ranching and how that is ground zero for the concept of sustainability.
“We understand that they are all inter-related,” Aljoe said. “Our grazing lands are the common denominator."
The first thing to understand about sustainability is that it means long-term, continual improvement, according to Aljoe.

United Nations Declare 2026 the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists
|
The Society for Range Management (SRM) has been a part of this effort since 2015, with a simple proposal submitted to federal agency leaders. A group of partners working to designate an IYRP coalesced at the 2016 International Rangeland Congress in Saskatoon. Since then, more than 300 organizations and 68 countries have joined together to raise awareness for the world's largest ecosystem - rangelands.
The resolution passed on March 15 affirms that “healthy rangelands are vital for contributing to economic growth, resilient livelihoods and the sustainable development of pastoralism.” It also recognizes that “pastoralism is a dynamic and transformative livelihood linked to the diverse ecosystems, cultures, identities, traditional knowledge and historical experience of coexisting with nature”. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is the agency tasked with facilitating the implementation of the IYRP in 2026.

Farm Bureau- Analyzing Farm Inputs: The Cost to Farm Keeps Rising
|
The cost of growing crops could outpace revenue for many farmers in 2022, making it more difficult to break even despite rising commodity prices and increased demand both domestically and globally. The American Farm Bureau Federation is launching a series of Market Intel articles examining rising farm production expenses.
The first report concludes that farm production costs are likely to increase 6% in 2022, which follows a 12% increase in 2021. This continues a trend stretching back several years. Since 2013, farmers have seen almost all production expenses increase. For example, livestock and poultry expenses have gone up 46% and marketing, storage and transportation costs have increased 59%.
Farmers are seeing a number of production cost increases including:
• Rising fertilizer, seed and chemical prices, which now make up to 17.5% of on-farm expenditures
• Rising fuel and energy prices, exacerbated by uncertainty due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
• Increased costs of labor, both on-farm and for agribusinesses serving farms
• COVID-19 disruption of labor markets and production
