Records Were Broken as OYE Sale of Champions Hits $1.5 Million Mark
|
The final event of the 2022 Oklahoma Youth Expo was truly a grand finale- with records falling as 212 market animals were led or driven through the sale ring and the agricultural and business community of the Oklahoma rewarded those 4-H and FFA members for the hard work they had invested into their projects. The result- a record $1.5 million dollars was awarded to Oklahoma's Ag Youth.
For the third time in the history of the Oklahoma Youth Expo(and it's predecessors)- the Grand Champion Steer brought six figures. The Grand Champion Steer, owned by Sadie Wynn of Newcastle 4-H was sold for $102,000 to a buyers consortium that included Bob Funk and Express Ranches, Livestock Nutrition, Bank of Western Oklahoma, McAfee and Taft, Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and Generator Superstore. Sadie's Steer was the Champion Crossbred before being selected as the Grand Champion of the show by judge Jack Ward.
The Grand Champion Barrow was shown and owned by Cade Rea of the Hydro Eakly FFA. Cade is a senior at Hydro Eakly and plans on attending Oklahoma State University- his story is amazing and he share a small part of it with Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur after his barrow brought a record price of $52,500. Watch their conversation in the video box below.
Cade Rea's barrow was purchased by Westgate Marketplace, Bank of Western Oklahoma, Oklahoma Farm Bureau's YF&R, Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma, Community of Hydro and Randy Renberger.
It was a double day of memories that young Sayde Allen of Canute 4-H enjoyed- as she showed the Grand Champion Market Lamb and the Grand Champion Market Goat. Her lamb was purchased for $15,000 and the buyer group included CSTK and the OKC Fairgrounds and the State Fair of Oklahoma.
Sayde's Grand Champion Market Goat was also purchased for $15,000- and bought by McDonalds all across Oklahoma, the Diamond Hats and Bank of Western Oklahoma.

Don Schieber Announced as 2022 Hall of Fame Award Winner
|
Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur is proud to announce Mr. Don Schieber as the recipient of the 2022 Governor’s Outstanding Achievement Award in Agriculture. The Kay County farmer will become the 25th inductee into the Oklahoma Agriculture Hall of Fame, the state’s most prestigious agriculture award.
Schieber will be arriving to the Annual Ag Day at the Capitol event in Oklahoma City via a mule team wagon on Thursday, March 24th at 8:00 a.m., alongside of Governor Kevin Stitt and Sec. Arthur.
“We are exceptionally proud to call Don Schieber our 2022 Agriculture Hall of Fame inductee,” said Blayne Arthur, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture. “He is an exceptional agriculturist, is extremely passionate about what he does and has raised the bar for Oklahoma wheat producers.”
One who knows Schieber likely has heard him say “there is no better place on Earth than to be with God and your family in the field while harvesting a crop to feed the world.”
A personal note from Ron- Don and I first met as classmates in the first class of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program- Don had to endure listening to me send reports back to the US at odd hours from our international trip to China and Taiwan- we have been friends for over forty years and I have watched him be one of our very best wheat industry leaders the state of Oklahoma has ever had- Congrats Don and Celia- this is so well deserved!
The pic below comes from 2011 when OSU honored Don as a distinguished Ag Alum- and he received his award that day from then Dean of Ag at OSU Dr. Bob Whitson.

In Memory of Former OSU Dean of Agriculture Dr. Bob Whitson
|
Robert Edd (Bob) Whitson went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 17, 2022. He would have been 80 years old next month.
Bob’s professional career began as a Farm Management Specialist in South Texas with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. He served as a faculty member in Range Science and Agricultural Economics focusing on both teaching and research. For the next ten-plus years, Bob served as Senior Vice President at Frost Bank in San Antonio, Texas where he managed agricultural and urban properties across the State and beyond. Bob returned to Texas A&M where he served as Department Head in Rangeland Ecology and Management and Deputy Director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.
Bob was the Vice President of the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DANSR) at Oklahoma State University- arriving in Stillwater in May of 2005. He served not only as vice president of DANSR, but also as Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Director of the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, and Director of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. He retired from OSU in July 2012.
Following retirement, Bob served as the Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Agriculture working with ranchers across the State. He also served as acting Assistant Director of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
A personal word(Number two for today)- Dr. Whitson knew everyone's name it seemed- and he was always smiling- and that included into this retirement- I remember seeing him several times after he has left Oklahoma and moved back to his beloved Texas at Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers meetings- he would get a big grin on his face when our eyes connected and made a point to come over and we would catch up for a few moments- and he always thanked me for this daily email- saying he was so glad he was able to keep up with his Oklahoma friends thru it. And he always thought we should do something like this email in Texas.
He was so well respected across Oklahoma as well as in his native state of Texas- and he was a difference maker in farming and ranching in both states- Rest pain free and in peace my friend.
Memorial services are happening later this morning in College Station.

Cattle Markets Continue to Act Like a Roller Coaster- We Check in with Kelli Payne
|
The feeder and stocker markets started off 2022 with optimism- but recent weeks have seen a rollercoaster ride feel return- especially with the impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine hitting grain and energy prices. I talked about the markets with the President of the Oklahoma National Stockyards, Kelli Payne about the recent hits that prices have taken the world's largest feeder and stocker cattle market.
Payne says it has not just been the Russia-Ukraine conflict that is impacting their market. It's also the drought that has progressively gotten worse from late fall 2021 to now the start of spring 2022. Much of their prime territory that the market serves is very dry- and the worry is that forage supplies may force many cattle producers to make some hard choices about their herds in the fairly near future.

Oklahoma Pork's Kylee Deniz discusses New Mandatory Pork Checkoff Rate Change
|
Earlier this month, pork producers gathered in Louisville, Kentucky, to focus on many topics challenging the pork industry for their Pork industry forum. Oklahoma Pork Council Executive Director Kylee Deniz was on hand at the forum with six of Oklahoma pork producers who served as voting delegates.
I caught up with Deniz at the Oklahoma Youth Expo, and She said the mood for the pork industry is positive, "This is the first time we've gotten together as an industry since Covid, and our pork producers were just excited to get together and have that community."
Deniz said the industry has learned several things while grappling with the Covid 19 pandemic. With supply chain challenges and labor shortages that the industry faced, Deniz said producers were focused on the decisions that would prepare them for a better future. One of the big decisions coming out of the pork Forum was approving a change in the mandatory Pork Checkoff rate.
The current rate of $0.40/$100 value per live animal will change to $0.35/$100 no later than Jan. 1, 2023, representing a 12.5% reduction in the Checkoff rate.

It's Deadline Week at the Capitol- Speaker Pro Tem Kyle Hilbert Offers an Update from OYE
|
It's deadline week at the Oklahoma Legislature- and by the end of this week- any bill that will be eligible to advance the remainder of this session must be passed out of the originating body- either the House or the Senate.
I talked with the Speaker Pro Tem of the Oklahoma House Kyle Hilbert this past week at the Oklahoma Youth Expo about his election as the number two man in the House earlier this year- and what was happening in the House as it relates to getting bills moved out of the House to the Senate by the end of this week.
Hays and Hilbert also talked about his FFA roots and how the Blue and Gold prepared him for leadership in the State House of Representatives and for life.
