Ag Day Celebrated Nationally Yesterday- In Oklahoma to be Celebrated Tomorrow
|
For the 49th year- National Ag Day was celebrated in Washington. The nation’s capital looked a lot like rural America this week as farmers, organizations, and companies representing and serving farmers took to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to celebrate National Ag Day.
“National Ag Day provides farmers with an opportunity to raise some of our key issues with policymakers and their staff in a fun and engaging way,” said Iowa farmer and National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) President Chris Edgington. “The event attracts everyone from people strolling the Mall to senators and leaders at USDA.”
Many ag groups, lawmakers and others stopped at the beginning of this week to salute the farmer and the rancher- we have links to some of those in the stories that follow.
MEANWHILE- it's Ag Day tomorrow in Oklahoma as the focus at the Oklahoma State Capitol will be to celebrate the farms and ranches of our state. Lt Gov Matt Pinnell tweeted about the impact of Farming and ranching and agribusiness in our state- "Agriculture is one of our state’s most important industries and provides 188,294 jobs and $28 billion in total output each year. Oklahoma’s 77,000+ farms and ranches are feeding and clothing our state, nation, and world."
Governor Kevin Stitt and Secretary of Ag Blayne Arthur will be kicking off the day with a mule team and wagon ride to the steps of the State Capitol- with them will be the 2022 Inductee into the Oklahoma Ag Hall of Fame Don Schieber- a wheat farmer from Kildare in Kay County- when they arrive at the Capitol at 8 AM- the Governor will participate in the ceremony to honor Don and his family.
Other things that will be happening at the State Capitol tomorrow include Made in Oklahoma Booths will open at 9 AM on the second floor rotunda(note in past years- we were on the 4th Floor but after the Capitol renovation- the booths are moving to the 2nd floor) Also at 9- there will be an Oklahoma Ag Youth Council Program and at 10:30- a program to spotlight Ag in the Classroom will be happening- both of those events taking place in the Blue Room.

Terry Stuart Forst Shares Her Ranch Story to Celebrate National Ag Day
|
A fifth generation Oklahoman, Terry Stuart Forst is the general manager of the Stuart Ranch—Oklahoma’s oldest ranch under continuous family ownership- which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018. With more than 40,000 acres spanning across parts of southeastern and southwestern Oklahoma, Forst has courageously faced the challenges of Oklahoma weather, changing markets and world events with eternal optimism and a deep faith.
Since 1868, Terry Stuart Forst’s family has met weather and market challenges head-on, adapting to conditions, changing plans and learning from past generations to produce high-quality beef.
“I feed my family the same beef the consumer buys,” said Forst. “It’s my responsibility to my animals and to the consumer to use the best animal health practices and feeding programs available.”
Forst along with all Oklahoma producers have a shared commitment to raising cattle in a safe, humane and environmentally conscious way by using the latest technology and resources. From nutrition programs and veterinary care to management practices and proper facilities, producers use a variety of tools to keep animals healthy and safe.
“We love what we do, and we value tradition, legacy and integrity,” said Forst. “As stewards of the land we respect the livestock and resources in our care.”

Lankford, Colleagues Work to Lower Costs of Fertilizer for US Farmers
|
Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) along with Representatives Tracey Mann (R-KS) and Cindy Axne (R-IA) led 82 of their colleagues in sending a letter to the US International Trade Commission (ITC) requesting it address the strain on the fertilizer supply by eliminating duties on phosphate fertilizer products imported from Morocco, and suspending the process to impose new duties on urea ammonium fertilizer from Trinidad and Tobago.
In the letter, the members stated that “Currently, in a time of tight global supply and demand for corn, soybeans, wheat, and other commodities, planting decisions are increasingly being made not on market fundamentals but rather on the cost of production driven by the price and supply of fertilizer. Again, we urge you to reconsider the duties placed on phosphate fertilizer products imported from Morocco and suspend the preliminary duties on UAN products from Trinidad and Tobago.”

Clay Pope Talks about Climate Change and High Input Costs
|
There's a new blog up at Southern Plains Perspective from Clay Pope focusing on climate change and high input costs.
"When you work on climate change issues and agriculture, you never know what you’re going to get hit with when you go to the coffee shop.
"Case in point—Just the other day, I was at a gathering of some of my fellow agricultural types and was hit with a pointed question; “Why in the world should we be worried about all this climate change stuff with everything else going on? Have you priced fertilizer or fuel lately and I don’t even know if I can get glyphosate?”
"Point well taken."

Jack Ward Excited About Gene Editing Arriving- Says Hereford Breed Working on Rules for Adoption
|
The Executive Vice President of the American Hereford Association, Jack Ward, told yours truly that the breed continues to watch the approach of new technology for beef cattle producers. Ward says that Gene Editing seems to be getting closer to reality- and in fact, it has arrived earlier this month.
In a conversation with Ward on the sidelines of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, I asked about Gene Editing and how this work with the DNA of bovines might impact seedstock operations. Ward says "It's interesting that you have mentioned this as it has been just a few days ago that there was a release out from FDA that they have accepted a gene edited animal- an Angus Bull- I think he is in Florida- and it was a slick haired gene...we have been on the phone with the folks who have done that." He adds that they have written some guidelines and rules for the Hereford Association that would govern gene edited animals- and he says it is getting closer to reality for the entire beef cattle business.
The pic above is the Angus bull in Florida(the one on the left) that is the result of Gene Editing in manipulating the SLICK trait for cattle)

Biofuel Groups Pleased with Brazil's Suspension of Ethanol Tariff
|
Brazil has temporarily lifted its 18 percent tariff on all U.S. ethanol as of Wednesday, March 23 and running through the end of the year as a means of decreasing inflationary pressures. The following is a joint statement from Emily Skor, CEO, Growth Energy; Ryan LeGrand, President and CEO, U.S. Grains Council; and Geoff Cooper, President and CEO, Renewable Fuels Association:
“We are pleased to see the temporary elimination of the 18 percent tariff, which should improve access for Brazil’s ethanol consumers as well as help meet its own decarbonization goals. This is an issue we have been working on for a number of years in meetings and correspondence with officials from Washington to Brasilia.
“We welcome this decision and see it as an opportunity to continue discussions with Brazil to expand the global use of low-carbon ethanol, reduce barriers to trade and elevate its prominence in energy discussions. Our hope is that with this action, Brazil and the U.S. will share with third parties the vision of free and open global ethanol markets.
“We will continue to pursue a long-term, open and mutually beneficial ethanol trading relationship with Brazil as we work to make this temporary reduction permanent. We look forward to continuing to work closely with USDA and USTR to return to a fair and reciprocal trading relationship with Brazil regarding ethanol."

Farm Groups Release Feeding the Economy Report
|
U.S. food and agriculture groups Tuesday released the sixth annual Feeding the Economy report. The report's findings show that seven percent of the nation's economy and 29 percent of American jobs are linked to the food and agriculture sectors, either directly or indirectly.
Amidst the global supply chain and inflation crises, these sectors also exported $182.91 billion worth of goods, helping the U.S. maintain its position as a leading player in global agriculture. In 2021 these sectors contributed a total of $3 trillion to the U.S. economy. Here's the keys from the report by the numbers
Total Jobs: 43,464,211
Total Wages:$2.30 trillion
Total Taxes: $718.15 billion
Exports: $182.91 billion
Total Food and Industry Economic Impact: $7.43 trillion
John Bode, President & CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, says the report "highlights how food and agriculture overcame pandemic disruptions to continue to serve as a bedrock of the U.S. economy." Other groups involved in the effort include the American Farm Bureau Federation, The Food Industry Association, and the National Restaurant Association.

Finally- a Word From State FSA Exec Steve Kouplen on National Ag Day
|
The following release comes from Steve Kouplen, State Executive Director for USDA’s Farm Service Agency; Jamey Wood, Acting State Conservationist for USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service; and Jim Bellmon, Regional Office Director for USDA’s Risk Management Agency offering a Biden Administration perspective on National Ag Day.
Today is National Ag Day, a time for us to thank farmers and ranchers for feeding, sheltering and powering our nation. We also want to celebrate and recognize the pivotal role of producers in mitigating climate change through voluntary conservation efforts.
Climate change is happening, evidenced by persistent drought, frequent tornadoes and storms, and larger and more powerful wildfires. Our agricultural communities are on the frontlines. Now is the time for us to act, and Oklahoma producers are doing their part.
We’re focused on providing producers tools to help mitigate climate change. As part of this, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken proactive steps to improve programs.
We bolstered the Conservation Reserve Program, providing an incentive for climate-smart practices and investing in partnerships to better quantify the benefits of this program.
With our Environmental Quality Incentives Program, we launched a new cover crop initiative as well as new conservation incentive contract option, all with a goal to make available additional funds to help producers conserve natural resources.
And finally, we’re enhancing Federal crop insurance to support conservation. In 2021 and 2022, we provided producers with a premium benefit for acres planted to cover crops.
