Lt. Governor, Matt Pinnell Credits the Agriculture Industry as Being the Backbone of Oklahoma
|
At Beef Day at the Capitol on May 4th, I met up with Lieutenant Governor, Matt Pinnell. Pinnell and I talked about the value of Oklahoma Agriculture and agritourism opportunities within the state.
“I think every day should be a beef day at the State Capitol,” Pinnell said.
For everything our agriculture industry does, Pinnell said, it is more important than ever to tell the story of what our farmers and ranchers do for our citizens of the country and the world. They feed and clothe the world, he added.
“I say it often and when I am speaking to the cattlemen’s association or anybody else,” Pinnell said. “I still prefer to eat my beef from pastures, not Petri dishes.”
We are on the frontlines of that debate in this country, Pinnell said, and one of the backbones of our state will always be our ag industry. In supporting farmers and ranchers, Pinnell said he wants there to not be just a state conversation but a federal conversation about this as well.
Pinnell said the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association does a wonderful job of organizing the state and partnering with other cattle associations around the country.
“We are in it right now, when it comes to the issues that that cattlemen’s association fights for every single day,” Pinnell said.

OSU's Kim Anderson Sees Crop Prices to Hold Relatively Strong
|
This week on SUNUP, Dr. Kim Anderson, Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist. During this week’s edition, Anderson speaks on global exporters, wheat harvest and market prices.
“The first thing we need to talk about is the wheat tours going on in Oklahoma and Kansas,” Anderson said. “Oklahoma tour came in around 58 million bushels, a little more than half of last year’s crop.”
Anderson said USDA’s production estimate will come out next Thursday on May 12th and the market is waiting on that.
“The big news is out of India,” Anderson said. “We have talked about India having the 5th record crop in a row, and that their exports were going to increase and offset some of the Ukrainian reduction in exports.”
Then we have got a heatwave in India, Anderson said, that has decimated a good portion of the crop. India is talking about prohibiting all exports and keeping that wheat in and so that had a positive impact on the market, he added.
“Russia had a negative impact on the market,” Anderson said. “They are exporting wheat now and they have increased their monthly exports this last month.”

Beef Export Value Sets Another Record; Pork Exports Improve but Remain Below Last Year's Record Totals
|
U.S. beef exports soared to another new value record in March, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). March pork exports were the largest so far this year but well below the record-large totals posted in March 2021. Lamb exports continued to gain momentum in March, reaching the third largest monthly volume on record and the highest value in nearly eight years.
Demand for U.S. beef soaring in broad range of markets
Beef exports totaled 126,285 metric tons (mt) in March, up 1% from a year ago and the third largest on record, while value climbed 33% to a record $1.07 billion. First quarter exports increased 6% to 353,852 mt, valued at just over $3 billion (up 41%).
Pork exports to Mexico, Dominican Republic on record pace
March pork exports were 222,581 mt, the largest since November but nearly 25% below the record volume achieved a year ago. Export value was $615.3 million, also the highest since November but down 23% year-over-year. First quarter pork exports fell 20% from a year ago to 629,928 mt, valued at $1.71 billion (down 17%). Pork exports to Mexico and the Dominican Republic raced to a record pace in the first quarter and South Korea posted a strong increase in export value, but shipments to most destinations were below last year.
Editor's note- we will get some of the details behind the numbers the next couple of days- had a great conversation with Erin Borror of USMEF that will be featured on Beef Buzz

NCBA's Ethan Lane Hopes to Ensure Risk Management Tools Are Available for all Sectors of Cattle Production
|
Back with Ethan Lane, Vice President for Government Affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and head of the NCBA’s Washington D.C. Office. Farm Director, KC Sheperd visited with Lane earlier this week at the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual Washington Watch.
Lane talks about disaster assistance for cattle producers and issues with wildlife conservation.
One of Lane’s priorities, he said, is making sure disaster tools and conservation tools are accessible for producers. He wants to ensure these opportunities are present for risk management at the cow-calf sector, he added.
“LRP all of a sudden is becoming a more important program for those producers with those subsidy moves a couple of years ago,” Lane said. “There has been a tremendous increase in the use of those programs.”
While it is good that the use of Livestock Risk Protection Programs has increased, Lane said he wants to make sure that there are tools available for producers to manage their risk at every segment of production.

NFU's Rob Larew Believes Transparency in the Marketplace is of Utmost Importance
|
During the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Washington Watch, in Washington D.C., Farm Director, KC Sheperd had the chance to speak with various individuals devoted to serving our farmers and ranchers who are essential in providing for the world including the President of the National Farmers Union, Rob Larew. Recently, NFU’s donated $125,000 to help those involved in the agriculture industry in Ukraine and Larew said that is important.
“As farmers and ranchers out there, we certainly understand troubles and challenges and so forth,” Larew said. “Looking at what many ways characterize the breadbasket of that part of the world, we know what those farm families must be going through. It is just so unbelievable.”

Rainfall This Week Putting Dent Into Drought in Eastern Two Thirds of Oklahoma
|
We have grabbed the five day Mesonet map for you this morning(you can click on it to see the real time equivalent on the Mesonet site) which captures both of our significant rainfall events across Oklahoma this week- Haskell in eastern Oklahoma ended up with almost a foot of rain- flooding was a problem in that part of the state- but a lot of Mesonet sites have clocked in with one, two or three inches- very helpful when it comes to replenishing moisture in the soil profile.
The Drought Monitor story up in this morning's email probably reflects some of the first event on Monday while this second round that we had Wednesday into Thursday will impact the numbers in next Thursday's report.
While it will provide limited benefit to the 2022 winter wheat crop- these rains will help pasture and range conditions and once we dry out- help with getting our spring crops established.
Left out- many parts of western Oklahoma. Let's keep praying!
