Oklahoma Drought Conditions Jump According to Latest Drought Monitor Report
|
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report, dry weather favored summer crop maturation and harvesting in many parts of the country, but reduced topsoil moisture for newly planted winter crops. According to the latest U.S. Crop Progress report, 15% of Oklahoma's winter wheat is planted.
In the southern Plains, short-term dryness, aggravated by late-season heat brought on more abnormal dryness increased drought conditions in Oklahoma and Texas.
Of the dry, hot weather in the southern Plains, Tulsa, Okla. was one of the driest reported. In the last week, moderate or worse drought conditions jumped from 11% to 39%, making current conditions the worst reported this year in Oklahoma.
Nearly 80% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse at this time. Conditions are the worst for the northwestern part of the state, which has been dealing with abnormally dry conditions since spring. Harper and Woods counties are now reporting a small patch of extreme drought. Various areas of severe drought conditions have been reported in Beaver, Cimarron, Creek, Harmon, Harper, Hughes, Noble, Okfuskee, Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Tulsa, Woods and Woodward counties. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous fire weather outlook for much of Oklahoma.

Shaky Chinese Economy Sends Ripples Through Crop Markets, Among Others
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about how China’s weak economy is affecting crop markets, among others.
“I think most of what is happening to the crop markets is outside the markets,” Anderson said. “The big thing is China.”
“China is having financial problems and they have a weak economy right now,” Anderson said. “I think the world is nervous about that.”

New Research Shows Grid Market System Adds $700 Million in Value to U.S. Beef
|
In the early 2000s half of the feedlot cattle sold in the U.S. were sold in a cash market. Today, little more than 20% of the cattle sold in the U.S. are sold that way. New research out of Kansas State University, studied the evolution of the market, especially the rise of grid-pricing of cattle. We feature comments from the three K-State Researchers who produced the report for the Chief Economist of the USDA.
When consumers sent signals back down the supply chain to producers, the beef industry listened. How consumers purchase items and what they prefer showed U.S. beef cattle producers that value-based, grid-marketing agreements served producers, packers and consumers better than cash-market agreements.
Ultimately, the goal of a grid market is to match beef quality with consumer demand.
“We were estimating that because of that higher-quality beef, the possible premium that (has been) added to sellers of beef is about $700 million as of 2019,” Dr. Brian Coffey, a researcher and professor at KSU, said.

NFU Announces Campaign to Fight Monopolies in Agriculture
|
The National Farmers Union, launched Fairness for Farmers. This campaign seeks to rally Americans to urge their Congressional leaders and the Biden administration to take concrete steps to curtail consolidation in agriculture, which negatively impacts farmers, ranchers and consumers.
This endeavor has clear goals: to curtail consolidation in agriculture and bust the monopolies, which hurts farmers, ranchers and consumers,” Rob Larew, NFU president, said. He added: “We launched Fairness for Farmers because we have a President who is committed to taking on the challenge of fighting consolidation in agriculture. We are all buoyed by President Joe Biden’s Executive Order on ‘Promoting Competition in the Marketplace’ – a commitment from his Administration to restore fairness to our economy.”
One goal of the NFU is to reform the Packers and Stockyards Act.
