Micaela Danker with ODAFF is Your Guide for Fall Fun This Year
|
Fall is a great season to be outdoors with friends and family in Oklahoma, especially after those hot summer months. Oklahoma offers so much to do this time of year, from watching the leaves change on the Talimena National Scenic Byway, to pumpkin picking and even alpaca petting!
We sat down with Micaela Danker, agritourism coordinator for the Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry, about all the activities available to you, right now.
Danker said Oklahoma is home to nearly 40 pumpkin patches and mazes, scattered across the state. ODAFF just launched a new Oklahoma Agritourism Fall Guide, which is available for order or download for free!
“It is a guide to Oklahoma fall agritourism for this year,” Danker said.
Danker said many Oklahomans, who are at least 21 years old, will be excited to hear about the newly launched Oklahoma Craft Beer Trail. Oklahoma also has a handful of wineries that make up 10 different wine trails to try.

Dr. Derrell Peel Talks Record Beef Exports in 2021
|
This is a part of the weekly series known as the "Cow-Calf Corner" published electronically by Dr. Paul Beck. Today, Dr. Derrell Peel talks about how 2021 has been a record year for U.S. beef exports.
In the latest livestock trade data, August beef exports were up 21.3% year over year with year-to-date total beef exports also up 21.0% from 2020. Beef exports in the month of August were an all-time record for any month.
The previous record for annual beef exports was in 2018. However, 2021 beef exports are up 9.1 over 2018 for the January - August period and are forecasted to finish this year 8.0 - 9.0% above the 2018 level.
Changes in the composition of beef exports since 2018 show how U.S. beef export markets are developing. Japan remains the largest export market for U.S. beef but is declining in total and as a share of total beef exports. While the Asian markets have grown, beef exports to Canada and Mexico have declined in total and as a share of the total.

Lankford Focuses on State-led Approach to Caring for Public Lands that Protects Private Property
|
Senator James Lankford joined Congressional Western Caucus and Senate Western Caucus Members to unveil an alternative to the Biden Administration’s "30 by 30 initiative" and America the Beautiful report, known as the Western Conservation Principles. The Members’ approach is a blueprint for responsible, effective conservation supported by rural communities across the United States.
“We do not need new vague and lofty conservation campaign promises; we need state-led policies that protect private property and are smarter, more efficient, and effective,” Lankford said. “We already have 640 million acres of federal land-most of it in the western states-with an extensive, existing maintenance backlog that is being ignored. Biden wants to irresponsibly heap more maintenance obligations and more regulations on the problem. We should take care of our existing beautiful public spaces and ensure we respect private property owners and those who live and work around our public lands.”

AFBF Forms Partnership with MANRRS
|
The American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Society for Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) announced they have entered into an agreement with the goal of increasing minority involvement in agriculture.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed today is expected to strengthen membership value for both organizations through collaboration on projects, including written content for each organization’s publications, providing leadership training and expertise, and cross promoting programs and events.
“We are excited to join with MANRRS and share Farm Bureau’s resources and programs with potential new farmers and the next generation of leaders in agriculture,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “Farmers and ranchers represent less than 2% of America’s population but are responsible for feeding the entire country and beyond. We will need the brightest minds and new perspectives to continue meeting the growing demand for healthy, affordable food. We believe the partnership we’re forming today will benefit both of our organizations and all of agriculture.”

More on Fall Calving Best Practices from Dr. Rosslyn Biggs
|
Last week, KC Sheperd, associate farm director for Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, spoke with Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, director of continuing education for the College of Veterinary Medicine and beef cattle specialist for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service at Oklahoma State University, about how producers can be best prepared for fall calving season. Today, they continue the conversation, talking about best practices to follow once those babies are on the ground.
Biggs said she likes to get weights of each newborn calf and get them tagged and castrated, if they are set to become steers. Otherwise, it is most important to watch mama and baby, making sure each is healthy.
“Starting right off, we need to be watching them close,” Biggs said. “In those early hours we are needing colostrum in those calves, ideally as soon as possible and for sure within that first 12 to 24 hours.”
Biggs said producers should intervene early if they suspect something is wrong. Ultimately the goal is to have a healthy cow that will raise healthy, profitable calves, so the goal of any operation during calving season must be to support the breeding stock in every way possible, she added.

National Rural Water Assn. to Receive Nearly $7 Million for Improvements in Oklahoma
|
Congressman Tom Cole congratulated the National Rural Water Association (NRWA), headquartered in Duncan, Okla., after it was announced that the non-profit will receive two federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, totaling nearly $7 million. Both awards come from the Water and Waste Disposal Technical Assistance and Training grant program, which provides funding to qualified non-profits for projects and training to solve water and waste-related issues.
The first award, totaling more than $4.5 million, of which a portion of will support efforts in Payne County to establish a set of highly skilled water workers to ensure water infrastructure is strong, modern, safe and sustainable for the communities. The program will also help create jobs in the area, advance technological innovation at small water and wastewater systems and create economic development opportunities.
The second award, totaling more than $2.6 million, of which a portion of will support projects in Stephens County to develop rural communities and grow local economies as well as enhance the sustainability of utility system governance, management and operations through project development and the delivery of the Sustainable Utility Management program and hands-on technical assistance.
“I am delighted that the Fourth District’s own National Rural Water Association will receive substantial funding from the USDA to support water infrastructure improvements and strengthen the workforce in two key areas of our state,” Cole said. “Along with paving the way for the creation of jobs and increasing economic opportunities statewide, the investment in rural Oklahoma will help maintain safe water and modern and sustainable infrastructure for the future.”
