Drought Monitor Report Shows 95% of Oklahoma Abnormally Dry or Worse
|
According to data from Dec. 8 to Dec. 14, 2021, drought conditions in Oklahoma continue to deteriorate. As of Dec. 14, 95% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse. Moderate drought conditions or worse account for nearly 83%. Severe drought conditions or worse account for 36%. Extreme drought conditions doubled, now accounting for 8%.
All of Harmon County and nearly all of Cimarron County are classified as in extreme drought. Extreme drought conditions are also reported in Beaver, Beckham, Custer, Greer, Harmon, Harper, Jackson, Kiowa, LeFlore, Texas, Washita and Woods counties.
The 6-to-10-day precipitation outlook map shows Oklahoma is likely to receive lower-than-normal precipitation levels. The 6-to-10-day temperature outlook map shows higher-than-normal temperatures are very likely.

Activity Increases Among Animal Rights Extremist Groups Since Pandemic Began
|
When the COVID-19 pandemic sent folks home indefinitely, people focused their attention on their side-hustles, hobbies and interests. As a result, a rise in activism was observed, according to Hannah Thompson-Weeman, director of development and communications strategy for Animal Agriculture Alliance. She told us that she has seen an increase of activity from groups who oppose animal agriculture.
“People have not seen a lot about (activism); maybe it is not getting as much attention (because) we have other issues going on,” Weeman said. “Unfortunately, that is not the case. We have seen an uptick in certain incidents over the past year and a half.”
Weeman said folks at the grassroots level of the agriculture industry have continued to witness group protests and suspicious incidents, like drone sightings over farms.
“One trend in particular that we are concerned about is activist groups trying to contribute to and take advantage of supply chain disruptions,” Weeman said. “While some are concerned about that, some activist groups want the supply chain to be disrupted because they want consumers to not be able to purchase animal proteins.”

OKFB Foundation Accepting donations for Kentucky Producers affected by Tornadoes
|
The Oklahoma Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is accepting donations for Kentucky farmers and ranchers impacted by tornadoes that struck the state Dec. 10, 2021.
The Governor of Kentucky said the storms are the most devastating tornado event in the state’s history along with declaring a state of emergency.
The foundation encourages county organizations to donate to the cause, and the OKFB Foundation for Agriculture will match the donation up to $100.
All donations collected by the foundation will be sent to Kentucky Farm Bureau to assist their efforts in aiding Farm Bureau members in need through their KFB for Kentucky Relief Fund.

USDA Invests $578.9 Million to Build and Improve Critical Rural Infrastructure in Rural Oklahoma
|
U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack yesterday announced that USDA is investing $5.2 billion to build and improve critical rural infrastructure in 46 states and Puerto Rico. The investments reflect the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to Building a Better America by investing in rural communities and will help expand access to high-speed internet, clean water and reliable electricity in people’s homes and businesses across rural America.
“When we invest in rural infrastructure, we invest in the livelihoods and health of people in rural America,” Vilsack said. “Under the leadership of President Biden and Vice president Harris, USDA is committed to Building a Better America by investing in America’s rural infrastructure, expanding access to broadband, clean drinking water and resilient power infrastructure. The investments we are announcing today will drive the creation of good-paying union jobs and grow the economy sustainably and equitably so that everyone gets ahead for decades to come.”
This announcement follows the recent passage of President Biden’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and reflects the many ways USDA Rural Development’s programs are helping people, businesses and communities address critical infrastructure needs to help rural America build back better.

BASF Launches Axant Flex herbicide trait technology for Cotton Growers
|
Yesterday, BASF announced its newest cotton innovation to prevail over resistant weeds, Axant™ Flex herbicide trait technology. This unprecedented quadruple-trait herbicide stack provides tolerance to Alite™ 27 herbicide1, BASF’s latest herbicide offering for cotton growers battling difficult to control weeds. This innovation is in addition to proven resistance management herbicide solutions Liberty® and Engenia® as well as glyphosate. BASF plans to bring Axant Flex technology to market in select FiberMax® and Stoneville® cottonseed varieties for the 2023 growing season, pending herbicide regulatory approval and identified country import approvals for the trait event.
“Herbicide-resistant weed pressure is one of the most pervasive challenges cotton growers face,” Luke Mankin, BASF North America Regional Marketing manager, said. “For decades, BASF has committed to bringing cotton growers new solutions to combat increasingly resistant weeds, and now with Axant Flex technology, we can give growers back the control and flexibility they need to more effectively win the war against weeds.”
The launch of Axant Flex technology provides cotton growers with the latest innovations in weed management as well as a few firsts for the cotton industry:
- Axant Flex technology features the Axant herbicide trait, the first trait developed and commercialized in cotton to enable the use of Alite 27 herbicide, an HPPD herbicide, plus GlyTol®, LibertyLink® and XtendLink® technology traits.
- XtendLink® technology enables cotton growers to spray over-the-top applications of Engenia herbicide.
- With Axant Flex technology, BASF will be the first and only company to offer a quadruple-herbicide tolerant/resistant trait stack in cotton in the U.S. market that helps growers gain control over yield-robbing weeds like Palmer amaranth.

Oklahoma Senator Inhofe and Colleagues Send Letter to USDA Secretary Vilsack- Calling for Action in WTO Against India
|
Today, 18 U.S. Senators sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai requesting the administration pursue a World Trade Organization (WTO) case against India’s domestic support for rice and wheat production. The United States has previously highlighted India’s non-compliance through counter-notifications at the WTO Committee on Agriculture.
Among those signing the letter is Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe, as well as both Senators from Kansas- Senator Jerry Moran and Senator Roger Marshall.
“American rice and wheat producers are operating at a clear disadvantage compared to their competitors, primarily from India, where the government is subsidizing more than half of the value of production for rice and wheat, instead of the 10 percent allowable under rules,” the letter reads.
“Wheat and rice farmers rely on open markets and fair trade to facilitate trade, which plays a vital role in supporting our growers and jobs in rural America. NAWG appreciates Senator John Boozman for leading this letter in the United States Senate,” said NAWG CEO Chandler Goule.
