Lawmakers Learn the Ropes from 4-H and FFA Youth at OYE Legislative Showmanship
|
Tuesday was an exceptional day at the Oklahoma Youth Expo- it's a day where some of the young people get the opportunity to interact with state lawmakers from their home area during the annual Legislative Show at the OYE.
Over 110 lawmakers were at the State Fairgrounds on Wednesday evening- and most of them competed in a friendly way by showing a lamb, pig, goat, or calf after receiving instruction from the 4-H or FFA owner of the animal.
Several judges were on hand to decide who should be declared the master showman of this year's event, as judged picked several species winners and one overall 2022 Showmanship winner. This year, the Title went to Senator Roger Thompson, who represents Senate District 8, which comprises Okmulgee and McIntosh counties and portions of Okfuskee and Muskogee counties. (Senator Thompson is shown above holding the halter of the steer with all the lawmakers involved at OYE- and in the second shot- the Senator and House Ag Chairman Dell Kerbs sport big smiles after the hog class where Senator Thompson was declared the winner.)
Our coverage of the 2022 OYE is being powered by Hilliary Communications, serving more than 19,000 customers with telephone service in 22 counties throughout Oklahoma & Texas. Click here to learn more about the Hilliary family and their efforts to serve rural Oklahoma!

Blake Kennedy Has High Expectations for the 2022 OYE Night of Stars Gilt Sale
|
The 2022 Oklahoma Youth Expo's Night of Stars Gilt Sale is coming together- and Blake Kennedy with Kennedy Ventures says he is excited about the gilts lined up for the sale that will happen Wednesday evening(TONIGHT!) at the OKC Fairgrounds in Building 8. He told me "this year we are selling 130 of probably the most elite gilts we have ever been able to offer- that's hard to say with the record setting sale we had last year."
The bar was set high in 2021 with the gilts in the Night of Stars Sale bringing just over one million dollars. Kennedy says "I would love to tell you we were going to break that- but we don't know- but the quality is there. Already the phone has been ringing off the hook the last two days" as prospective buyers wanting to put bids in on their gilts of choice.

Beef, It's What's for Dinner Brand Garners 6.3 BILLION Positive Impressions from NASCAR Race Sponsorship
|
For the second year the Federation of State Beef Councils, on behalf of the Beef Checkoff, partnered with the Daytona International Speedway to sponsor the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner 300, the Saturday night race ahead of the legendary DAYTONA 500 last month. The number of impressions for the brand that the race was named after was huge- Six point Three BILLION Positive Impressions for Beef, It's What's for Dinner.
I talked with Heather Buckmaster with the Oklahoma Beef Council, who had boots on the ground before, during and after the race as one of those who interacted in telling the Beef story to consumers/race fans.
Buckmaster tells us that days before drivers took to the track, beef was in the spotlight on local TV and radio stations across the country as seven-time burger bash champion and celebrity chef Josh Capon shared race day recipes. The partnership also provided an opportunity for the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. brand to be back on TV, reaching younger and increasingly diverse NASCAR fans across the nation.

House Advances Measure to Add Meats to 'Oklahoma Certified' List 78- 0
|
Rep. Jim Grego, R-Wilburton, won unanimous House passage of a bill on Tuesday that would expand the list of meats on the "Oklahoma Certified" list.
Currently beef (bovine) is the only meat on the list. Under House Bill 2368, swine, goat, lamb, poultry and fish would be added.
"Getting meat locally from a safe and trusted source while at the same time helping our Oklahoma farmers and ranchers is vitally important," Grego said.
"This is especially true in this current climate where gas prices, supply chain breakdowns and inflation are significantly raising the price of many products. The more 'Oklahoma Certified' meats we have, the better we'll be able to feed people here in the Heartland."

To Bee- or Not To Bee- an Arkansas Researcher Working on the Answer
|
Farmers know not to apply pesticides on their fields during flowering season when bees are present. But wild bees can come into contact with pesticide residues, in some cases, for months after spraying.
Neelendra Joshi, associate professor of entomology for the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said wild bees provide important pollination services for crops and native flowering plants.
Managed western honeybees, long the go-to pollinator for fruit and vegetable producers, are experiencing population declines in recent years. An Environmental Protection Agency report says about 30 percent of honeybees die off each year from colony collapse disorder.
Joshi said the decline of managed honeybee colonies makes native bees more important for agricultural production.

Oklahoma Prairie Beef Solutions - Ground Beef is NOW in Stores!
|
Oklahoma Prairie Beef Solutions is an entity of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association. OPBS has created another marketing opportunity for producers’ cull cattle. What this allows you, as the producer, to do is sell your cattle on hot carcass weight (HCW) and market the beef in local retail stores under the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s label.
Speaking of final product and stores…on Monday, February 28, 2022 OPBS delivered a little over 3,100 pounds of ground beef to Uptown Grocery in Edmond.
The original plan was to supply one store and get a footing for the retail market. However, that shipment was large enough to supply all 12 of the Uptown Grocery/Pruett Foods Oklahoma locations! To date we have harvested 29 head.
If you are interested in participating in Oklahoma Prairie Beef Solutions, please contact Sydnee Gerken by phone (405)368-0908 or email sgerken@okcattlemen.org

New Study Highlights Benefits of the Partnership Between Contract Farmers and Chicken Companies
|
The National Chicken Council today released a study that presents the results of a recent broiler industry survey designed to capture key live chicken production statistics. In addition, the study summarizes several key trends in broiler production efficiency, returns and loan quality data.
“Raising chickens under contract is one of the best and most reliable sources of cash flow that helps keep families on the farm,” noted agriculture economist and the study’s author, Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC. “The business partnerships between chicken farmers and chicken companies are mutually beneficial, viable and profitable. The real winner is the American consumer, though, who benefits from the healthiest and most affordable protein in the meat case.”
The study shows that contract growers make more money compared to other farm households- and it also shows that the health and well-being of the chickens has greatly benefited from the contract farming structure. In 2021, the average on-farm livability of a flock of U.S. broiler chickens was almost 95 percent. In 1925, it was only 82 percent. Farmers who furnish live chicken housing have captured this benefit of better chicken performance.

Feed Costs Will be Biggest Impact of Russia-Ukraine Conflict for Beef Cattle Producers- So Says Glynn Tonsor
|
The conflict in the Ukraine as that country deals with the invasion of their country by Russia is a major worry for agriculture globally- and the Ag Economics Department of Kansas State University offered a series of Zoom presentations this past week on the many different aspects of how US and southern plains ag could be impacted.
That included a presentation this past Friday from Kansas State Livestock Market Economist Dr. Glynn Tonsor.
Dr. Tonsor's key takeaways include his belief that the immediate direct impact tied to feed costs, both now & upcoming seasons because of the wheat and corn production that will likely be disrupted in Ukraine.
Dr. Tonsor does believe that as started 2022 that the general meat demand situation was and still is sound, with clouds building because of high energy costs taking away from the family budget the dollars that might be spent on beef.
Dr. Tonsor told the participants in the Zoom gathering that his biggest economic concern for livestock producers is a retreat from global connections that could mean fewer opportunities to sell our beef and pork into the global market.
