Over 330 Vendors Greeting Farmers and Ranchers at 2022 Oklahoma City Farm Show
|
Foot traffic for the opening day of the 2022 Oklahoma City Farm Show was good- even as the spring winds were gusty outside for the vendors in front of the Bennett Event Center at the OKC Fairgrounds. John Riles with Midwest Farm Shows, the owner of the show as well as the Tulsa Farm Show that happens each December, was pleased by the first day turnout. He told me that interest by companies and organizations that wanted to exhibit at the 2022 event had been strong leading up to the show- and that resulted in 330 vendors being a part of the 18th annual Farm Show operated by his family's company.
Riles pointed out that that some of the traditional things that are a part of the Oklahoma City Farm Show are in place- morning coffee and pastries at 9 AM for early arrivers- the opportunity to register for the drawing of $1000 in showbucks at 1 PM each day(must be present to win), the cattle chute demos twice daily, the mower riding demos and country singer Rusty Rierson who has become a regular ar both the Oklahoma City as well as Tulsa Farm Shows.
Two days remain for the 2022 Oklahoma City Farm Show. Admission and Parking around the Bennett Center are free- show hours are 9 AM to 5 PM on Friday and 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday.

Jimmy Emmons Talks Benefits of Starting Down the Road to Soil Health
|
Jimmy Emmons, rancher, farmer and Oklahoma Conservation Commission’s Soil Health Mentoring Coordinator, talks with me about the importance of hanging on to every rain drop and how landowners can reap numerous benefits from prioritizing their soil health.
Jimmy Emmons and his wife Ginger have been farming and ranching for a dozen years using soil health principles, no till and working to build up the ability of their soil to hold onto rain when it falls.
When we started down our soil health road in 2010, NRCS measured our infiltration rates at the ranch and on my farm ground to be about a half inch per hour, Emmons said. Today it is somewhere between 6 and 8 inches an hour, he added.
When he first started growing cover crops, Emmons said many believed it was not possible because of limited rainfall. Now he knows that to be true, he added, because back when they did get those heavy rainfall events, a lot of that water ran off.
Once you start to have that ability to capture those large rainfall events, then you start having water to work with, Emmons said. It is the same way for rangeland, he added.
“If we can get that aggregation going, keep cover on the ground and not overgraze if we use rotational grazing practices, we actually see that water infiltration rates go up and that rangeland as well,” Emmons said.

Introducing Rylee Smith of the Oologah FFA Chapter, Your 2022 Northeast Area Star in Agriscience
|
During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the 17 Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization.
The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Agricultural Production.
This week, our coverage of the 2022 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists concludes with Agriscience competitor Rylee Smith of the Oologah FFA chapter representing the Northeast Area.
Smith's project involved testing the nutrient levels, organic matter and compaction of the soil after cattle have been allowed to graze the land for different amounts of time. Her results show that cattle can add important elements to the soil with proper land management.
Smith has competed with many different projects throughout her FFA career, her favorites being those related to her passion, food science, she said.
“I won food science last year, so I couldn’t compete again, so I had to go with environmental which deals with the soil plants are grown in, so it essentially it leads to the food science category,” Smith said.
Our coverage of the 2022 Oklahoma FFA Convention is sponsored by Hilliary Communications, serving more than 19,000 customers with telephone service in 22 counties throughout Oklahoma & Texas. The company also offers IP television service and internet speeds up to 1 Gig. Click here to learn more about Hilliary Communications.

OSU's Kim Anderson Talks Dry Weather Worries and Ukraine in His Weekly SUNUP Appearance
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks current grain markets.
When looking at the factors that are impacting grain prices right now, Anderson said the biggest is Ukraine, Russia and the war that is going on overseas.
“Then there is weather,” Anderson said. “You go into central and western U.S. and it’s too dry, and you go back to the east and it’s too wet.”
Delayed planting plays a role as well as price volatility and high input cost during this time, Anderson said.
Anderson will be a featured part of this weekend's SUNUP produced by OSU Ag Communications and seen on OETA and then available online.
Check out our web story at the link below where you can hear Dr. Anderson's latest analysis ahead of the weekend and also see the full lineup of OSU experts that will fill the half hour hour.
