OSU'S Kim Anderson Talks about Wheat Prices Dropping This Week
|
This week on SUNUP is Dr. Kim Anderson, Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist. During this week's edition, Anderson speaks on the wheat market and the drop in prices this week for many commodities.
"Somebody would say they fell out of bed," Anderson said. "In four marketing days, we have probably knocked $1.25 off of wheat prices. That sounds like a lot, and $1.25 is a lot of money for wheat prices to go down, but if you go back to when we have four-dollar wheat, that is really equivalent to going down about 60 cents."
The biggest reason we saw that kind of decline in just a few days, Anderson said, was because of the Russia and Ukraine export of wheat
"Russia announced this week they are looking at a record 31 billion-plus harvest coming on," Anderson said. "Ukraine has reported that they will harvest about 80 percent of their crop. Ukraine is getting storage facilities to store that wheat."
Anderson said there are rumors that Russia is moving wheat. They have wheat that they say they are going to export and put on the world market, but they are having trouble getting vessels, he added.
For Ukraine, Anderson said Turkey plans to help them export.
"Other countries are going to help Ukraine get that wheat out, so that wheat is starting to move on the market and that makes the market nervous," Anderson said. "Who knows what prices are going to do."
Whether it be up or down, Anderson said prices will continue to move as we have seen in the last week. Aside from wheat, Anderson added that we saw all commodity prices go down this week.

Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act of 2022 Passes with Objections
|
Although the Cattle Price Transparency Act has sections within it that are well supported by those in the cattle industry, there is controversy about whether the cattle market mandate should be part of the measures. Several major agricultural groups have opposed the mandate.
Led by Midwest and Northern state lawmakers including the authors of the measure, Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska, and Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, it was passed by a voice vote.
The Cattle Transparency Act is especially punitive to the Southern Plains and with no senators on the ag committee from Oklahoma or Texas, it fell to Kansas Senator Roger Marshall to defend that part of the country and oppose the measure.
"Transparency is the nectar of free enterprise and capitalism, but capitalism without competition creates opportunities for exploitation," Marshall said. "All that being said, I agree with the American Farm Bureau and Kansas Farm Bureau, and the Kansas Livestock Association that these mandates will actually harm feedlots and cow-calf operations in Kansas by empowering and giving more control to the big four packing plants."

Not Much Change in Oklahoma Drought Conditions as Summer Conditions Set In
|
According to the latest drought monitor, in Oklahoma, exceptional drought is the same as last week at 1.4 percent, with Cimarron County being the only county in the state facing levels of exceptional drought.
Extreme drought or worse is also the same as last week at 5.4 percent.
Severe drought or worse is at 15.8 percent, which is the same as last week.
Moderate drought or worse has actually increased from last week's 30.3 percent and is now at 31.2 percent.
Abnormally dry or worse conditions have also increased slightly at 41 percent (last week was 40.3 percent).
The 6-10 day precipitation outlook map shows an above 33 percent chance of rain for the Oklahoma Panhandle and a near-normal percent chance of precipitation for the rest of the state. Some high temperatures can be expected this weekend, but that will be followed by a cold front the following week which may yield some moisture for the drier parts of the state.

U.S. Solicitor General Supports AFBF Challenge to California Proposition 12
|
The U.S. Solicitor General, one of the highest ranking officials in the Department of Justice, filed a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of a challenge to California's Proposition 12. The state law seeks to ban the sale of pork from hogs that don't meet California's production standards, even if the pork was raised on farms outside of California. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) filed the challenge, arguing Proposition 12 violates the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause.
In the amicus brief, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argues that AFBF and NPPC have stated a valid claim that Proposition 12 violates the Constitution and will create burdens in interstate commerce. "Other States might well condition in-state sales on even more square feet of space per hog, or on compliance with requirements concerning animals' feed, veterinary care, or virtually any other aspect of animal husbandry. The combined effect of those regulations would be to effectively force the industry to 'conform' to whatever State (with market power) is the greatest outlier."

Plains Grains Reports Harvest in Southern Plains- Texas 78%, Oklahoma 89% and Kansas 35% Complete
|
The following are details from Plains Grains and their Executive Director Mark Hodges of harvest progress as of June 24th in the hard red winter wheat belt.
Here at the end of the week- Plains Grains calls the two of the three southern plains wheat producing states as largely done- Texas at 78% and Oklahoma at 89%- while Kansas is one third complete as of June 23rd at 35 percent harvested.
According to Hodges - "The 2022 HRW harvest in Oklahoma is now speeding its way into the final stages as the crop is now approaching the 90% completion mark. For the most part hot and windy conditions over the last 10 days or so have continued to allow significant progress with harvest in Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas. Yield reports are consistently in the 20 bu/ac to 30 bu/ac range (with higher and lower exceptions). Texas progress has slowed as harvest moved into the higher elevations of the Texas Panhandle."

Joshua Gilstrap of Stillwell Joins Teachers Across the Country to Share FFA and Agriculture Opportunities
|
For years, teachers across the country have advocated for their students regardless of their environment - whether it be in-person, virtual or hybrid.
Agricultural education teachers are no exception. For the past few years, they have faced numerous challenges. This summer, they will be able to come together to share how they can work together to share the story of FFA and agricultural education in their states and communities. More than 70 agricultural education teachers will continue to share the story as part of the National Teachers Ambassadors for FFA program. That includes Joshua Gilstrap who is an Ag Ed instructor at Stilwell High School in Stilwell, Oklahoma.
The program, which began in 2016, provides teachers with the tools to share information about FFA and agricultural education with their communities. Teachers selected for the program receive intensive training in June and July to learn and collaborate on educational resources. Similar to last year, this year's training will be virtual.
Throughout the year, the ambassadors will present workshops and work with teachers from across the country to brainstorm and share ideas. Through the year, the ambassadors will serve as a voice of the organization to teachers across the country. They will, in turn, provide feedback from those in the educational field to the National FFA Organization. In addition, a few have been selected to serve as mentor ambassadors - providing support to others and feedback to the organization throughout the year.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd visits with Dakota Moss of Livestock Risk Services. When the pandemic hit in 2020 the cattle markets along with the rest of the world suffered. Many farmers and ranchers altered their marketing plans on crops and livestock to try and prevent a loss in the down Covid markets. This led to cattle being held months longer than planned hoping for a better market. Unfortunately for many farmers and ranchers they had no choice but to sell much heavier cattle into a down market. Resulting in a lower $/cwt price and profits lost. Sheperd and Moss discuss some alternative options for producers with the Livestock Risk Protection program.
