Thirty Four Oklahoma Youth Grabbed Top Honors at Junior National Beef Breed Shows This Summer
|
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture did the research in checking with the Beef Breeds across the country and determining which young people had the best of the best in the many Junior National Cattle Shows from across the US here in the summer of 2022. Oklahoma Ag Secretary Blayne Arthur thought there might be a dozen or so winners and she was looking forward to bringing them to the State Capitol to honor them. But- as the numbers were added up- she underestimated the success achieved in 2022.
Based on the survey of the Beef Breed Associations- Oklahoma has had 34 young people who brought home a Champion or a Reserve Champion banner from a national cattle show this summer.
A celebration was planned by Secretary Arthur and her ODAFF team- The crowd that gathered on Thursday filled the Governor's Blue Room as the group received citations from many state lawmakers and then waited for Governor Kevin Stitt to offer his congratulations and take pictures with the young high achievers.
The 34 Champions represent several hundred young Oklahomans who have traveled to multiple states for these summer shows here in 2022.
Check out our story- as we spent time with the families as they celebrated at the Capitol- you can hear a couple of them tell their story and we have a link from ODAFF of all the pics taken by the Agency's photographer that you can peruse.

Oklahoma Drought Conditions Improve Only Slightly Since Last Week
|
With last week’s moisture, the possible worsening drought conditions in Oklahoma have been kept at bay, improving only slightly in this week’s report.
According to the latest drought monitor, in Oklahoma, exceptional drought remains at zero, the same as the last two weeks.
Extreme drought or worse is at 31.7 percent, up slightly from last week’s 37.4 percent.
Severe drought or worse has decreased slightly from last week’s 92.1 percent to this week’s 91.7 percent.
Moderate drought or worse has decreased slightly and is now at 99.1 percent, compared to last week’s 99.8 percent.
Abnormally dry or worse conditions remain at 100 percent, the same as the last two weeks.
The 6 to 10-day precipitation outlook map shows the majority of Oklahoma continues to lean below a 40 to 50 percent chance of precipitation through August 14th.

Upcoming OCA Ranch Rodeo to Support Children's Miracle Network
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am featuring comments from Farm Director, KC Sheperd’s interview with the chair of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Ranch Rodeo, Weston Givens, talking about the upcoming event and its support for the Children’s Miracle Network.
“It’s coming up quick,” Givens said. “August 19th and 20th I believe with be our 38th annual. We are really looking forward to it. We are going to bring in 12 of the toughest ranch teams we can find in the state. These are going to be historic ranches that are scattered from all corners of the state that raise cattle for a living and ride horses for a living. They are going to be fun to watch do their thing.”
Many of the cattle that will be at the rodeo, Givens said, are raised in country that you cannot get to on a four-wheeler or in a pickup.
“You have got to get there horseback and do your business with a rope, so these fellas know how to get that done,” Givens said. “You are going to see them do things like doctor cattle, you are going to see them catch a cow that has a bad bag and milk her out, you are going to see them brand calves in a pen that doesn’t have a chute, you are going to see them get in a big pen and sort out the cattle they need to move over to the neighbor’s place, and you are going to see them do all the stuff they do at home on a daily basis.”
Givens said the primary focus of the ranch rodeo is to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle network.
“We have been involved with the Children’s Hospital for years and years now,” Givens said. “We are just so proud to work with them. We are proud of the work that they do and the research they do to help kids and find cures for diseases and help families with kids that need help.”

Coming up Sunday- former OkPork Exec Roy Lee Lindsay (now the top exec at North Carolina Pork) has asked us to tell you about a documentary film that will be shown at the Oklahoma City Documentary Film Festival on Sunday, August 7 at 12:30 pm at the Douglas Auditorium.
Hog Farmer: The Trials of Joey Carter tells the untold story of a North Carolina hog farmer who found himself at the center of a federal lawsuit involving some of the nation’s most ruthless trial lawyers and one of the world’s largest food companies.
Roy Lee says that it is a stark reminder that agriculture across America remains under attack – from activists, trial lawyers and others who want to put an end to animal agriculture.
You can find more information about the film festival and purchase tickets at www.docokc.org. The showing is Sunday, August 7th at 12:30 PM.

Candidate Clark Jolley says State Treasurer is the Role of a Lifetime
|
Farm Director, KC Sheperd, visited with State Treasurer Candidate, Clark Jolley, about his plan to improve services for Oklahomans and stand by farmers and ranchers if elected as State Treasurer of Oklahoma.
“When you look at the treasurer’s office, obviously most of the investment portfolio is dictated by statute to be in very secure investments,” Jolley said. “About 93 percent of the portfolio of the treasurer’s actual investment that they directly control is going to be in U.S. treasuries and U.S. mortgage-backed securities and agencies and those types of things that have bonds.”
The other 7 percent, Jolley said, is seen being invested in local banks and that can provide a tremendous benefit not just to the taxpayers of Oklahoma by getting a return on their money but also provides a huge benefit to those banks locally.
“Obviously, we have seen over the last several years, the last decade-plus, an effort from Washington to really starve out our hometown banks- our little community banks that know our citizens, that know their fellow folks in town,” Jolley said. “They have done everything they can to starve them out of existence and we don’t see as many of the small banks today as we used to because of them getting gobbled up by big city banks.”

U.S. Wheat Associates Vice Chairman, Michael Peters is Looking Forward to Promoting U.S. Wheat
|
Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visited with the vice chair of U.S. Wheat Associates and Oklahoma wheat producer, Michael Peters. At the gathering of Ecuador and Peruvian wheat millers visiting U.S. soil, Peters talks to Hays about his process of going through the officer chairs with U.S. Wheat.
“It has been off to a slow start, of course with the COVID issues the last few years, but things are really picking up now where we will be able to either have foreign customers come to us like we did today, which is a great chance for us to showcase our product to them,” Peters said, “but also, we are going to be able to go visit their countries and see what they do in their meals and bakeries. It is getting to know them personally that is very important in this.”
In agriculture, Peters said personal relationships are important. It is the same thing with the millers and bakers overseas, he adds.
“It is a great thing to have that personal relationship with them, to go visit their mills, to go showcase our product to them and tell them what our product can do for the end product that they sell to their customers,” Peters said.
A benefit for U.S wheat producers is the abundance of offices all around the world.
“When you go and see our overseas staff, the way they interact with our customers over there is amazing,” Peters said. “You could tell it’s not just a job to them, it is a pride thing to be able to sell U.S. wheat that U.S. farmers produce. They enjoy their job and there are proud of what they do and it’s a great relationship they have with our customers.”
Peters just recently assumed the vice chair of U.S. wheat.
“From vice chairman, you’ll move up to the chairman spot and then the past chairman spot,” Peters said. “Through the vice chairman spot, I do have some overseas trips coming up and I will be able to go represent U.S. wheat at different conventions and explain to them what our product is and what we have to offer and that’s a great opportunity for myself, but I think it is great that I am from Oklahoma and will be able to represent us and our hard red winter wheat.”

OSU's Kim Anderson says Grain Markets are Settling Down
|
This week on SUNUP is Dr. Kim Anderson, Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist. During this week's edition, Anderson provides his analysis of the grain markets and an outlook on the trends.
Looking at the way things are moving in the wheat market, Anderson said you must with the Black Sea area.
“This week, the first ship loaded with wheat left Ukraine port and was escorted out and went into Turkey for inspection,” Anderson said.
Anderson said they claim to be able to move one ship per day, but in a few weeks, Anderson believes they will possibly be moving up to two or three.
“The wheat is starting to move, and the crop is starting to move out of Ukraine,” Anderson said.
Russia is exporting their wheat, Anderson said, and looking at fertilizer exports.
“Except for the ammonia, their exports are back to normal,” Anderson said. “In the news is also the drought in the European Union area. The Rhine River is low, and they may have to stop export movement out of that Rhine river area and that will impact German exports. Germany is a relatively large wheat exporter.”
In the United States, Anderson said estimates for corn, soybeans, milo, and cotton production are being watched. Next week, he added, the USDA WASDE report comes out.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd visits with Dakota Moss of Livestock Risk Services. When the pandemic hit in 2020 the cattle markets along with the rest of the world suffered. Many farmers and ranchers altered their marketing plans on crops and livestock to try and prevent a loss in the down Covid markets. This led to cattle being held months longer than planned hoping for a better market. Unfortunately for many farmers and ranchers they had no choice but to sell much heavier cattle into a down market. Resulting in a lower $/cwt price and profits lost. Sheperd and Moss discuss some alternative options for producers with the Livestock Risk Protection program.
