Strong Momentum Continues for U.S. Beef Exports; Pork Exports Trend Lower
|
Coming off a record-breaking performance in 2021, U.S. beef exports remained red-hot in January, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Pork exports continued to trend lower in January, despite another outstanding month for exports to leading market Mexico.
Wide range of markets fuel another $1 billion month for beef exports
Beef exports totaled 119,066 metric tons (mt), up 13% from a year ago, while value soared 57% to $1.03 billion. This was the third-highest value total on record - trailing only August and November of last year - and export value per head of fed slaughter set a new record, exceeding $500 for the first time. Export value to South Korea set a new record - topping $300 million - and strong year-over-year increases were achieved in China/Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, the Caribbean and Central America.

With much of the region in significant drought- it's not a pretty picture shaping up across Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas for our winter wheat crop prospects.

Dr. Derrell Peel on the Arrival of Springtime
|
In his weekly analysis, Dr. Derrell Peel of OSU looks ahead as we see the arrival of spring.
Spring is trying to arrive in Oklahoma with several rounds of alternating warm and cold weather recently. Much of the state received a bit of snow last week but moisture totals were very small. The calendar says that winter is officially over this week and spring-like temperatures are forecast in the coming days and may be here for good. Warmer temperatures, low humidity, dry conditions and wind mean that wildfire risks are very high now.
The drought conditions impacting the region will become much more apparent in the coming weeks. The Oklahoma Mesonet system shows that precipitation over the past 120 days averages 44 percent of normal across the state. All regions of the state are dry with some much drier than others. The east central region has received 62 of normal precipitation, the most of any region of the state, while the Panhandle has received just 14 percent of normal since mid-November.
According to the Drought Monitor, nearly 92 percent of Oklahoma is abnormally dry or worse with over 56 percent of the state in D3 (Extreme Drought) and D4 (Exceptional Drought). The Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) for Oklahoma currently is at 321 (out of a maximum of 500). The Oklahoma DSCI was at 67 in mid-September 2021.

12 year old Trenton Morton Shares Some of his Favorite Things about OYE
|
The Oklahoma Youth Expo is a beautiful time to reconnect with friends and families across the state as everyone gathers to show livestock or watch the livestock show. Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with 12-Year-old Trenton Morton from the Newkirk FFA Chapter says one of his favorite things about OYE is getting to see his friends and family, "Meeting all the new people, showing my livestock, plus playing with my friends. That just brings it all together."
Trenton's Grandparents are Larry & Mary Peck, the founders of Ag Youth Magazine, a Magazine they started to tell positive stories about the outstanding young people involved in agriculture across the Midwest, and Trenton had also helped them take pictures for the magazine, "When I was little I loved taking pictures with my grandpa! It was the main thing to do when you came to OYE. I always had a camera on in the ring taking pictures."

Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor Impressed with Work Ethic Shown by OYE Exhibitors
|
When Business Leaders and Politicians take time and walk through the barns at the Oklahoma Youth Expo- they come away very impressed about the thousands of young people and their families working with their livestock and learning a variety of life lessons that will get them prepared to be outstanding citizens in the years ahead.
Count Oklahoma's 19th Attorney General John O'Connor in that camp of coming away impressed after spending time at the 2022 OYE. He told me "It's incredible and I love what it does in training these young people. Not only are they learning discipline but they are also learning to be entrepreneurs. I love this- they are hard working young people and they are the future of our state and of our nation."
O'Connor became Attorney in July 2021 after being appointed by Governor Kevin Stitt. He's making a run for the AG position for a full four year term this fall- but faces a tough primary battle that culminates with the June 28th Primary Election.
